New build ideas

280 Ackley is always a great, non-magnum choice for a rebuild. With the ability to effectively move the heavy-for-caliber .284 bullets with out the recoil of a magnum is an accuracy plus, not to mention the wide variety of those bullets for non-dangerous North American or African game.

If you want to go smaller than .284 caliber offerings, have you considered the 6.5mm Creedmoor?

Horsethief the build has started and it's going to be a 280AI. My gunsmith has the rifle and the instructions. It's all systems go!! Man am I excited!!

I would keep Grandpa's .270Win a .270Win. There are no flies on a .270!
CSC - This is not grandpa's 270. This is one I picked up as they just don't make a Model 70 in 280 Remington any more, and never have chambered the 280AI in one. This is a brand new project from the ground up so to speak.

6.5-06 is one I forgot to mention. I have been leaning heavy towards it.

I have a .264, .260, 6.5 284. so im not sure where it fits. (not real sure what that has to do with anything  )

what do you think about the .284 win? I know this would better fit a short action build.
has there been any reviews on the 26 nosler yet?

JUST my 2 cents on the 284 case and wildcats.

They do NOT better fit a short action......and exactly why the 6.5x284 (same length brass) are all chambered in long actions.

The 350 Rem mag, 6.5 rem mag and the 284 all ran into SERIOUS bullet seating issues loading higher BC bullets to short action max length with the base of the bullet robbing the case of capacity.

Each one in a LONG action has ZERO issues with bullet seating regardless of bullet used and if you add the length to bottom of the neck and add your fav longer range bullets you'll quickly discover they fit a long action much better and KEEP the entirety of their case capacity.

Even the 6.5 Creedmoor is not QUITE short enough to seat a 130-140 grain AccuBond and not be down below the neck bottom in a short action but it is closer.

Not a big thing to many and IMHO almost all of the short action rounds are "too long" for proper bullet seating. TO ME this has to interrupt the flow of energy as well as reduce the case capacity.

I've always scratched my head a bit why so much emphasis is put on "case capacity" and so little is put on USABLE case capacity.

The 6.5x284 is a screamer with a rep for barrel burning. I'd be temped since Im weird to make a 277-284 that would have zero bullet seating issues for a hunting gun.

With FOUR Nosler .277 partitions from 130-160 grain PLUS the Accubonds, I cant come up with any possibility I'd want for anything. That 150 grain LR AccuBond is a really long one with a stratospheric BC. With full body capacity to use regardless of bullet used since a long action...I'll bet it would be a very low recoil long distance rifle (for me and what I FEEL is long range).

End product would compete with or match the 270 win....just more efficiently with less powder burnt, less recoil and I'd be willing to bet, easier to work up loads for, IMHO. With the rep the 6.5x284 has it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't walk past the 270 with some bullet weights.

Just 2 cents. For the record, I can slightly beat 308 sized case ***usable*** capacity and keep it with a 284 case shortened to 1.8". Every single 308 based case 2.015" long...........cannot.

A full length 284 case is even longer so with bullets seated to neck bottom as the deepest allowed, it is simply much too long for a short action magazine.

*****For comparison, check out the length of the 6.5x55 Swede. It's SHORTER......and always in a long action. Even way back when there existed very long bullets for such.

Now........almost all calibers have the high BC , long bullets to use. Most cases cannot take advantage of them WITHOUT losing case capacity. To me, its all about 100 percent efficiency and powder space used.....for powder.

God Bless

I would do a 270 Winchester. But I'm a hunter, I want something I can grab a box of shells down at the corner store If I forget my ammo box. At one time I thought I needed a 6.5-06. Then I looked up the data.
