I have loaded extensively for my .325 WSM, but I just acquired a .300 WSM. I will be using 165 grain Nosler Accubonds. I also have H4350, H4831, and H4895. Here is my real question: My .325 WSM likes hot loads with a regular CCI 200 rifle primer. It went from shooting ok to great just by using this particular large rifle primer. All magnum primers and even other large rifle primers yielded less than stellar results.

Should I start with large rifle primers or mag's? The reloading manuals all suggest mags, but I never had them give good results with the .325. What do you guys think?

I have always used mag primers in magnums, specifically the Federal GM215M primer. That would be my suggestion. If you can't find an acceptable load, change primers and start over.

Do a search, there is a plethora of load data here for the 300 WSM.

That is the primer I first used in my .325WSM. I guess I will start there, but I know where to go if I don't get good results right away!

Because of the shorter powder column, it is quite possible to get by with LR primers. I use LR primers in each of my WSMs. The only time that LRM primers are mandated are when using ball powders and in extremely cold weather. However, in my 325 WSM and in my 300 WSM, preferred hunting loads (even in temps down to -40 C) have never failed me with LR primers. There certainly is no harm in using LRM primers, just be certain to work up the load as the pressure will be effected.

Only Browning - now you've got me curious! I've only used the Federal 215's, but I'll need to try the CCI's now - just to see if there's a difference for me and my .300 WSM!

Pop - interesting to see you load info - right at the top of the list are two powders I really like with the WSM; H4350 and Ramshot Hunter. Good stuff both of them!

I wasn't real keen on the WSM's when they were introduced, but fell into a good deal on a nice one and have really learned to appreciate the cartridge.

Guy,

I've had good success using CCI primers in my WSMs. Because Federals are sometimes difficult to find, the CCIs can make a good substitute. I'm using CCI200s in my hunting load on the 300 WSM with excellent results. However, I am using CT Failsafes, and when they are gone I'll be looking at another load. I'm not too worried, however, as I have quite a few loads that give me sub-MOA. Interestingly enough, several use CCI200s, though LRM primers figure in on other loads.

The .300 WSM is an interesting bird.

I always liked the .30-06, and the .300 WSM is all of that, and more. Top loads will get you within a whisker of good .300 Win mag loads, or right at that level, but it's easy to beat even stout '06 loads.

Interesting cartridge. I find it easy to load, easy to shoot. Have yet to take any game with it - but I don't know why it would perform much different than any other decent .30 cal I've ever shot.

Regards, Guy

As is true of all the WSMs, the 300 is easy to load for. It is not particularly finicky about powders and handles bullets up to 200 grains readily, delivering them at velocities that mirror those from a 300 WM. I've taken mule deer at the longest yardage of any game I've taken and moose. My favourite loads used either 180 grain Fail Safe bullets (of which I am finally in short supply) or 175 grain Partitions. However, I've developed loads that are far better than could be expected with 165 grain Accubonds, 180 grain Interbonds, 180 grain Mag Tips, 180 grain A Frames and 200 grain Game Kings. What's not to like?

I'm heading out to the range on Monday to try out some RL17 that I managed to get from Grafs. I'll let everyone know how I make out. I'll be shooting m y .300WSM Kimber montana and plan to use a chrony.

Don`t forget to throw in some RL 17 into the mix. When you can get some that is!!!

Fed 215GM worked well for me.

As for powder Reloader 19 and IMR 4831 was excellent. The new Reloader 17 should be a winner.

I duplicated a load from Winchester........W760 @ 68.0 and WLRM and WW cases with the 180gr Fail Safe.......excellent load for big animals.
