New Eyes For My M48 TGR 7mm-08 :)

After much thought and hunting with both a variable and fixed rifle scope this season, I have decided to opt for the Leupold FX II 6x36mm LR Duplex scope. When I consider the spot and stalk hunting I do every year out west and having to hump up and down those mountains I want a light, simple and uncomplicated scope that will allow me (due to long eye relief and low mounting) to quickly acquire my target out to 500yds. It is an imperative that it does not upset but fits the balance point of my M48 TGR while looking good at the same time. I believe the above mentioned scope will more that meet my criteria. Plus it will work nicely in a tree stand and out of a shooting house, allowing me to make quick shots on gas lines down here in south Mississippi and Louisiana.

Nice. I'm a big fan of both the 42mm obj and the 36mm obj Leupold scopes in 6x.

Most of my hunting over the past few years has been done with a fixed 6x scope. No problem at 30 yards, no problem at 300 - 400 yards. I think you'll like it!

Yes, my weaver 6x power convinced me that I would like just a simple 6x power scope. I felt I needed more eye relief and a shorter and lighter 6x power, along with an LR for quick acquisition of my target at distance or I would have stayed with the Weaver. If I use a 140gr bullet and get it to move between 2850 and 2900fps (which 760 and RL17 do) I will be able to use the dots. Also, I don't have to worry about turning my power ring to max power for the dots to work with the fixed 6x and that makes it simple and fast. :)

I've still got some variable scopes and I use them often, but I really have become a big fan of the fixed power scopes. I have used them for target & varmint shooting as well as hunting. The 6x is a great compromise for a hunting scope.

Besides, that 36mm objective 6x looks lean and classy on a rifle and doesn't weigh much either!

Yes, and when I use the dots I will not have to turn the a power ring to max to use the dots, the 6x makes it simple and fast.

I keep experimenting with variables...but I keep coming back to the 6x36 and 4x33 Leupolds.

Hard to argue with K.I.S.S. perfection.

I'm with you 100%. The 6x36 and 6x42 are great scopes. It should look very nice, and we expect to see some of your wonderful photo's of it when it's all mounted up sir!

It will come in next Thursday and I will be at the range Friday if weather allows it but picture will come no matter what.

Great set up Mike. Hard to go wrong with a good fixed power on a hard hunting rifle.

Yes, I agree with that for sure  I better since I bought it.

I forgot to mention that I shot a deer in Arizona at 618yds using an LR duplex in a 3.5-10x40mm VXIII on top of a Ruger #1 in 300Wby using a 165gr AccuBond, so the LR's will work if you get the ballistics to match the dots.

Also, the 10oz weight, low profile and great eye relief is icing on the cake. I took a coyote at over 400yds using a fixed 6x scope some years back and this Fixed Leupold scope is brighter and has much more eye relief than that scope did.

This one will be perfect for deer size game on my 7mm-08 and very fast in acquiring my target.

Mike,

Where did you find the greenery? That looks very sharp.

You got to remember where I live, way down south, in fact it is 78 degrees today. That is an evergreen that grows like a bush across the ground on my place.

I knew where you live, Mike. It just has been so long since I've seen green, I thought I'd pull your leg. The scope looks very sharp atop your TGR.

Mike,

Nice scope!
That scope is just about all you need and its looks nice on top of the M48.

Thanks Mike JD and yes FOTIS, it does look slender and elegant, yeah, it does look good.

So what is going to be your "LR reticule" load?

I will be using a 140gr bullet moving between 2850-2900fps and of course it will have to be under .5" when it comes to accuracy, and I will not be using the AccuBond since I will be making not only classic hunting shots out to 300yds where the AccuBond at 7mm-08 velocities works great but also shots from 300-500yds and so I will be moving to a standard cup core bullet that I know from experience will work on close shot maintaining integrity at 7mm-08 velocities and will still open up and expand in an acceptable way when making shots out to 500yds with a 7mm-08.
