Seems the facts of life are so up and down. Just a few weeks ago I am selling a custom 280 AI to cover an unexpected bill, now life put me in a position for a new project..Oh well what can you do.

Putting together a light, all around mtn gun, mainly for high country mule deer in the Frank Church Wilderness where we hunt, but also sheep and goat if I ever draw, and maybe an occasional elk if the opportunity presents itself.

Just committed to buying a Kimber Montana .308. Going to use talley rings and either a 2-7x33 VX-II or a burris timberline 3-9x32. Thinking a good accurate 165 grain AccuBond would be a good choice in the little 6 pound project.

Sounds like a fun project. I think if I were going to start something like that, I'd look for a 7-08, or, if I'd been living right and going to confession, a .260...

I like it....I like it a lot.

Not a lot a .308Win won't do with a good 165gr bullet to any reasonable range....a sub 6 lb rifle is the icing on the cake!

That sounds like a great project. I really equivocated on my latest project, thinking of a .308 (I've never had one), but coming down on a .358 Norma Magnum. I have worked loads for quite a few .308s, and all were a joy to work with.

... I like the 2X7 VX-2 Compact, but for mt. hunting, I'd really consider adding the extra 1.5 or 2.5oz & going w/ the 2.5X8 or 3.5X10 VX-3...

That 2.5-8x is one heck of a scope. So is the 6x fixed, with the 36mm objective lens. I think I'd put the 6x on it.

Nice call on the .308, simple. Accurate. Reliable.

I bought a Tikka Lefthand Stainless lite in .308 several years back. I went through several scopes until I bought a Zeiss Conquest 3X9. That scope just made the rifle perfect in my opinion.
Lightweight, superior optics and a full 4" of eye relief for that lively .308 recoil. What more could you want?
I've always been loyal to Leupold but this Zeiss opened my eyes to other brands for special purposes.
I might even try to find one for my 7mm Mag.

Well plans have now deviated. I went to pick up the rifle today and it was in worse condition than reported to me. I offered a lower amount and the seller wouldn't budge so I walked. Got in my truck, drove over to Sportsmans Warehouse and bought a Tikka T3 Superlite in .308. Only a few ounces more and $500 less money. Now for the scope...

I am with Guy on this one  that Tikka in a 308 win is excellent. I really believe the 6X in the 36mm objective will set that rifle off just right !

Blessings,
Dan

I'm helping a friend put his Superlight and Leupold 6x36 together this weekend.

What a combo.

Going to go with either the 6x36 or I really like the 2-7x33...especially if I can find one the auction sight for around $200.

The Tikka is a great choice and you won't be disappointed, big fan of the 6x36 over here too :) Good luck and let us know how it shoots.

There you go. I'm telling you a Finnish rifle with a German scope just looks right. Another selling point of the conquest is that it has etched reticles instead of wire. What I get is a low light scope I can actually see the reticle in the dark woods after my Leupolds reticles have dissappeared.
Anytime I hunt the woods the .308 Tikka and Zeiss are what I carry. One reason I went with the .308 is a larger projectile gives a better blood trail usually. So far none have run far enough to really check that out.

Here's what the Tikka lite looks like with the Conquest. Plenty of room for bolt lift with the factory rings.

SWFA has a sale on Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10X44. They are $299.95. I just put one on my 280. They make a nice scope for the money

I've got one of these Zeiss Conquests... love it. Great scope.

That's a great project. I think the 6x36 Leupold would be a perfect match on that rifle also. If you wanted you could get the simple but effective LR reticle in it with the hold over dots. I'm a fixed power guy and the little Leupold would look sharp. The 6x42 would also, but the 36 is just a bit trimmer. I like the thought of the 2.5-8 though too. That's a sharp scope!

That sounds like a really nice set up. A small 308 with a god scope like the others have mentioned would be really nice to carry around the hills. Haven't ever heard of a poor shooting Tikka either.
