Had the day off which is always dangerous. Went to the local gunshop to trade a shotgun in on a rifle. They gave me what I had into the shotgun so I put that towards a new Winchester M70 Extreme Weather. They didnt have the 7mm wsm in stock so they had to order it, the distributor actually had them in stock. I should get it next Tuesday.

Next stop was a Gander Mountain. I had been watching a big clearance bin of Federal Premium 7mm WSM 160 gr partitions and 160 gr accubonds for awhile. They had started out at $59.99 a box and had been slowly dropping. I spoke with the manager and asked him if he would deal on a very slow day at Gander Mountain. I left with 5 boxes of each for $24 per box.

So I have a new M70 E.W. on order, 200 rounds of ammo, just need glass. Am leaning towards Leupy VX-3 4.5-14x40. Have always had good luck with VX-3. Am considering Minox as well, the ZA5 3-15x42 looks interesting but I dont know of any place that stocks them to look at.

If I were to order a new M70, that one would be near the top of the list... along with a Sporter .264 WinMag or a Featherweight .257 Bob. Love the EW a lot... I have you rifle's brother, a .300 WSM.

I think I would lean towards a 3.5-10x40 rather than the 4.5-14x. Just like the scope a little better.

Sounds like a fine day, my friend!

You've done well. Perhaps I should invite you to come negotiate for my next rifle.

Dr Mike-

Yeah it was a win!

When it comes to haggling, I gotta tell you that I have no skill or patience for it. If you added up my record it would probably be will under .500!

Congrats on the new rifle. I am a real Leupold guy but looked through the ZA5 and think that I am going to try one. I thought that I could get one next week when I head up to pick up my new rifle but was advised that at this time the distributor won't run it through their store:(
Looking forward to a range report and photographs.

Blessings,
Dan

...I like the V3 4.5-14X40, still pretty compact & light compared to a lot of others, I've got an LR reticle on my .300WSM, but then again, I'm getting old & slow, & got a lot of ground to cover...

Great picture, Gene. It looks as if it could be in the Cariboo or Thompson/Nicola region of British Columbia.

Rifle will be a beauty.
I think I need to take you along for some sales bartering. Great price on the ammo!

I think you are going to really like the 7WSM alot. It is a very, very good cartridge. You can easily run 160 AB's or PT's into the 3100 range and with the M70 EW, I can't think of a better carrying rifle that will still produce some serious hunting ability.

I love my 7WSM. Had really good luck with 160 AB's and 162 Amaxs for target shooting.

As for scopes, I really like the Minox's. The 2-10 or 3-15 would be something super on that rifle. I like the 2-10's myself, but more personal preference to be honest. Can't wait to see your rig.

You really scored on the ammo as well. You could hunt a long time with all of that ammo and never want for a single thing. Looking forward to your range report.

Went and picked it up today!

This thing is slick!

I had tossed around different ideas for a scope and finally decided that I was gonna step out of my Leupold comfort zone. I ended up buying a Minox ZA-5 3-15x42 with the XR-BDC reticle. Been hearing a ton of good things about these and for the price I figured Id give one a try. When I got it I did side by side comparison with my VX3s and I believe that the Minox is clearer.

I had also ordered some Leupold Dual-Dovetail bases and rings in medium height thinking I was going to buy a VX3 with a 40mm obj then when I changed my mind and went with the 42mm obj Minox I was wondering if I would fit with mediums. It did.

I got it mounted and bore sighted today. I plan on hitting the range on Thursday to see if this thing will shoot.

Congratulations on the new rig, looks awesome!
Looking forward to your range report.

Nice setup I used a set of dual doves and mediums for my 44mm Z6. I like the sleek lines on a scope that hugs a rifle.

That's a good looking rig. I'm certain we're all waiting to hear your range report.

WOW! That rifle looks very nice buddy. I don't think you could have set it up any better! That is a great performer you have right there and it shouldn't pull your shoulder out of joint carrying it around a little either. Can't wait to hear how it shoots, although, I am betting it will be very good.. Congrats on that rifle.
