Choices at the local gun shop. Looking for elk, etc. all weather rifle that could still do double duty on deer, etc. Already have Rem700LSS Mtn .260 Rem and Steyr Classic American in 30-06.

Sako 75 Syn 7 mag for $900

Sako L61R Ser #15XXX, mint 300 winmag for $999

Sako 85 7 mag for $1,300

Kimber 8400 7 mag or 300 winmag $1,100?

Remington Sendero 7 mag $900

300 mag would add to your collection. Kmber or Sako would be the tough decision

+1,

The 300 Win Mag would be a nice step up over your 30-06.

+2 for the 300 Win. Mag....Does everything the `06 will do, with just more bullet speed and is flatter shooting too!

+3 on the 300 mag. If you are looking to increase the power and range from a 30-06, the 7mm rem just isn't too much of a step up IMO.

I am a real Sako fan and had a 75 (stainless and wood) 7mm. Thought it would be my one gun for everything. I now have Sako rifles in 308 and 280 while my boys have em in 270 and 30-06.

I have only had experience with those calibers for deer and antelope but I would probably also have to jump on the wagon for the 300mag for elk. I really liked the 7mm cartridge but it kinda tops out at the 170gn bullet range and doesnt give you that much over the 30-06. The perfect 300mag bullet is a 180gn (in my opinion) and gives you quite a bit more than the 30-06 with the same weight bullet. I have never elk hunted, but if I was looking at a caliber specifically for elk (from your choices) it would be the 300mag. I would not care for the recoil (hence my orientation towards the more mid-caliber range) but with a good recoil pad it would be my pick.

Actually if I could pick any caliber it would be the 280 AI. with 140 gn Partitions

My Sako 75 NIB 7 Mag just sold...

I vote #4 for the 300 Win Mag....as Long said, put a good recoil pad on her... if you shoot a lot or work up loads you may condsider adding a MBrake...

If the L61R FinnBear is like new that should be as good or better a shooter than the Kimber but with a heavier barrel contour... The Sendero will shoot tacks but is a load to carry in Elk country... :(
