Here is the new suit for my Mark V Synthetic 30-06 - a B&C Metalist stock in olive/black. The rifle is fitted to the stock and put together for this picture so you can see what the stock looks like. The rifle has been taken out of the stock now and is having a Crea-Kote finish so I can take the rifle in bad weather. When it gets finished and I mount the scope on it I will post a picture of the finished rifle.

Looking good bullet.
What scope are you going to mount?

Very nice Bullet! I love the way those stocks drop at the heel like they do.

Thanks YoteSmoker, I agree with your observation about the stocks drop at the heel and it sure makes for reduced recoil.

JD, I am going to put the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44mm because my load in this rifle for a 165gr bullet is over 3050fps and I can take advantage of this scope. I also have a 3-9x40mm Zeiss Conquest Rapid Z that I could put on it.

A long with the 165gr load I have developed for this rifle using a Sierra Game King HPBT moving at 3060fps on the average for deer size game, I will begin work on finishing some research where I began trying to get a faster, accurate 240gr Woodleigh load for the 30-06. I was beginning to have success with my Kimber before I got all tied up and excited about some Weatherby wild cat cartridges and custom rifles I was having built.

I am looking to get around 2450 to 2500fps with the 240gr but that might be to optimistic. I think there is an outside chance from work I did about two years ago. Should be fun and at least interesting to see how it turns out.

Me?

I would go with the 3x9 scope.........................

Just makes more sense to me. No foundational reason really. :p

POP, I would tend to agree if I did not shoot varmint with the 06. I shoot coyote with and 06 using the 165gr HPBT and in a year and a half with a game warden friend of mine north of Vicksburg MS, I killed 52 coyotes in a year and a half and my closest shot was 125yds and my farthest shot (all shots were ranged) was 426yds. The 4.5-14x44 Zeiss gives me a lot of versatility to also make long shots on small game while giving better low light capabilities in the early mornings and late evenings than the 3-9x40mm. I have used the 06 over 28yrs for everything from sunk, beaver, fox, coyote, hog, whitetail, mule deer, antelope to black bear, it truly is a versatile cartridge for me and when I finally finish my 240gr Woodleigh load (if accurate) I will also use it for Moose and elk up close and would not even mind using it on Brown Bear with that load. Of course this last load is for fun because on a brown bear I prefer my 375Wby.

I am impressed with your load getting 3060! I need to try working up to that in my son's M700. However, it only has a 22" tube & if I can get 2,950-2,975 I will be happy.

With the new steel in barrels and receivers, new bullets, powders, brass and primers of today the 30-06 in a rifle today can be shot at the same pressures as the 25-06 and 270. This opens up a whole new world for the 30-06 and actually in the right rifle and with the right powder and primers rivals the 300H&H and even the 300WSM in some cases. You add the 240gr Wooleigh bullet that was made just for the 30-06 and it truly is a new day for the old cartridge. Just start low and watch for signs of pressure but your 22" barrel will make more of a difference in my field experience that some contend on paper.
