I bought my dad a muzzleloader hawkens kit for X-mas. He has got it together. His B-day is coming up.

So other than powder and bullets, what does he need to go with his rifle?

What powder do U guys like, I was thinking triple 7 or shockeys gold?

T7 is a good powder to use, very consistent velocity with loose powder.
Stay away from Jim Shockey's Gold, its very inconsistent.

I also use the Nosler .451 cal 260 gr PT for WT deer. It is deadly on deer from 10 yds to 167 yds.

I totally agree with JD, I have had very good consistent results with the 777 loose powder.

whats accesories will he need?

can't use sabots in Oregon for hunting, it is primitive muzzleloaders only w/ traditional stuff.

The muzzleloader hunt is a draw but runs during the rut for deer, and usually snow on the ground for elk so its worth applying for. our deer season is in Oct when its still hot and prerut. and after a month of archery season so all the dumb deer are dead and the smart ones are nocturnal.
Plus they are Blacktails so they are tricky to begin with.

You can get a BP kit from Cabelas and other outfits. He will need something to carry powder in the field, I use pre-measured carriers with bullet in one end and powder in the other. Plus a powder measure to measure out loads. He will also need percussion caps, I use RWS, and a capper to seat the cap on the nipple. He will also need the gear to clean after shooting.

There is a lot of other stuff available to facilitate loading and practice. Not quite as bad as fishing, but there is a lot of stuff available. ;)

Ball puller
spare nipple
