Well I'm gonna be loading for a 7MM Mag some time early next year. Never loaded for or had one before, so I am at a loss for what bullet/ load to start with.
Ruger no.1 stainless and laminated. I would like a good deer/ Elk cartridge as usual. most of my deer are between 50 and 200 yards, you know how the elk range would be as well as I do. I did some trading today, and picked up some brass, a new set of dies, and an old box of sierra game kings in 160 grain flavor. ( this guy didn't have any Nosler) I wasn't looking for bullets at the time, but the guy thru them in for a box of 22-250 ballistic silver tips I had. The gun smith I am getting the rifle from suggested 175 for elk.
How would 160 grain AB's do for both species? what velocity and energy could I expect, and what powders do well in this caliber/rifle?
Is there any tricks to loading for a single shot as opposed to a bolt?
What bullet should I ask for for Christmas?
And thank you lord for making my son decide to claim my 300 winny!

My 7mm load is 160 AccuBond, cci250 primer, remington case, and H-1000 to a velocity of 3030 fps and it shoots a one hole group from my 26" model 70. I plan on using it on elk next year and it has already taken several whitetails. I hope its a good elk load.

My classic 7mm mag load.....

66 grains of RL22 and 160 AccuBond. With a 26" tube you should get anywhere form 3050-3100 more or less. Accuracy tends to be excellent.

JDMAG, I used a Ruger No. 1 in 7mm Mag for over 30 years & never fired a factory round through it. You are going to love your No.1  The only bullet I ever used was a 160 Nosler Partition. I harvested many whitetails, several pronghorn & mulies, 3 or 4 blackbears & 2 caribou. I was never able to get on a moose or elk but I would not have hesitated to use the 160 NP on either of them. The consistancy of this bullet is almost boring  It has never failed me. Powder of choice was H870, now gone, but in my brother-in-law's Ruger 1 in 7mm Mag I use the new HUS869. If he concentrates he can shoot 3/4" with it. I also load the 160 NP for him. Since I rebarreled my Ruger 1 to the 7mm RUM, I now use the 160 Nosler AB & H50BMG powder. What a deer smackin' combo that is :!:

JDMAG,

Congratulations on the 7mm Rem Mag, great all around caliber.

The 160 gr AB and PT are perfect for both deer and elk. The 160 gr PT is one of the chosen Nosler bullets for the RMEF program that Nosler participates in.

RL 22 is the powder the powder for the 7mm Rem Mag. You should be able to get to 3000 fps with a 160 gr bullet.

If you are only going to shoot one bullet, the 160gr AB is hard to beat.
150gr BT is also a good bullet for the 7 mag.
H4831 is another very accurate powder in this caliber.

Well, Just found out I'm gettin furloughed for the first week of the year, and for maybe 3 days befor Christmas. :( I may have to wait for some testing bullets. :? I am mostly a Partition man, so I'll Probably start with some factory seconds as soon as I can afford them. I saw some AB's at Bivwac last night that have about 4 days left on them. Might order some of those for a christmas present

I agree with the lhe others.
RL-22 and the 160 grain acubond. I shoot the stw, But I load for a buddie who shoots the 7 mag.
RL-19 is almost as good in his rifle.

So a 160 grain AB would be better for Deer and Elk, than a 160 grain Partition? whaat about the 175 grain 7MM Partition? is the accuracy better with the AB?
Just askin cause up till nw, I've been a 30 cal kinda guy.

Nothing wrong with the 175 gr PT, it will penetrate into tomorrow.
The 160 gr PT shoots a little flatter and will usually exit an elk. The 160 gr AB
with a BC of .531 will shoot pretty flat when launched at 3000 fps and give you all the penetration you need for elk. The 160 gr AB would be an excellent choice as an all around bullet for deer and elk.
