New toy! Guy..... it is all your fault!

Never used either optik but I would say the 1 you used and hit with the best more than likely? I know, you keep several boxed up ready to go,but I would flip,a coin and say the Burris ?
Either would work I am sure and I would be surprised if you guys had any speed goats to shoot at that were not in the next county  they have to be running scared around your parts !! Y'all probably sneak around at night and paint shoulders with bull's eye targets on them

I have a sightron mil dot and a burris FF2 ballistic reticle. Both are 3x9.

Which would you pick for now?

The Burris FF II ballistic plex is a great scope the plex works very well, I like mine.

Nice score! Looking forward to some range reports with it. What bullets do you plan to run out of it? I was happy with ABs out of the wife's 257 Bob and my Kimber 280ai for antelope this year and figure it would work pretty well on those WY mule deer too.

100 grain BT's fr everything. Coyotes antelope deer.

I have a 25-06 CDL, but am having a hard time deciding to keep it.

I bought it mostly to complete a trio of CDL rifles (35 Whelen, 30-06 & 25-06).

But I enjoy my 280s, 7mm-08 and 6.5 swede and have not grown a love for the 25-06.

If I decide to peddle it, will give you all first crack at it.

Do like the CDL rifles though. A 7x57 would be a great one.

When I showed up in Wyoming antelope range with a .257 Roberts, 1953 Super Grade, they teased me a little, that is until I nailed a bedded mule deer buck at 350 yards with my first shot. Comments about my Winchester .257 Roberts versus the Remington .25-06 rifle stopped there!

The way you've got your .257 loaded Charlie, it's pretty much the same as a .25-06 in the field.

It's funny the way we kid each other about rifles & bore sizes. My son and I usually hunt mule deer here in central Washington with his 6mm and my .25-06, and those are usually the two smallest bore rifles out of all the guys we hunt with. They work just fine...

Charlie they use to tease me about my 257 Rob all the time, the guys would call it a cork gun. I saw a 6 point White tail sneaking thru the green briar and thicks after another hunter had shot and missed him. He knew I was there and stopped behind a very large poplar tree and only showed me his hind quarter at about 200yds. While scoping him looking for a shot he stuck his head out from behind the tree, as my hunting buddy watched I used a small tree to brase my self and the rifle and placed the cross hairs on his nose and squessed the trigger Bang flop right there. Then I really took a ribbing because I had shot Rudolfs nose off and every body brought me a red light bulb to put in his nose. The 257 has a custom Douglas 26" barrel in a 725 Remington long action and loves 100gr bullets at 3100fps. I only use it now for heavy brush where I may only have a small place to put a bullet threw.
Didn't mean to steal your post Fotis just love my Robby.

TD, I feel the same way. I had a .25-06 Model 70 (from the 1990's) and I just could not warm up to it. With the .257, it fits my gun profile better and is compact and easy to carry. I tend to like older Mauser or Winchester actions, back when they were really smooth and pretty accurate if you were willing to invest a little time and Accra glass in them, you would get an accurate arm out of them. I pillered and bedded the Browning action and finished floating the barrel and the accuracy went from 3.0 MOA to sub MOA. Plus it is a really smooth action. I am very confident in it now!

The used to tease me in Utah deer camp about using a .270 Winchester. Most of them used 7mm or .300 Weatherby's. Twenty years and many deer later, they called me "one shot Charlie". Got to love it!

I have seen some Browning High Powers that made me scratch my head Charlie. Some of them are danged nice.. One of them in a 308 Norma would be okay with me.. A 300 Win Mag wouldn't hurt my feelings either.

Sorta like one of these

What will a 25-06 give me over my 7mm08? I figure loaded with a AB or PT it would be lights out on hogs or deer. I had been planning on a 30-06, but you guys got the gears turning. Low recoil, flat shooting, and lights out performance on gane.

Your 7-08 has the light bullet end covered pretty well AJ. I think your right to stick with the 30-06 or 35 Whelen for your heavy rifle. The 25-06 is sweet, but your 7-08 is right there with 120's. It'll run 120's pretty quick, and still give you the ability to run heavier if wanted. If anything, your 7-08 sit's in the middle between both the 25-06 and 30-06 really nice..

Focus on your 7-08, AJ. It will give the 25-06 all it can handle in a head to head competition.

Thanks for the solid advice. Im waiting on a new set of eyes for the 7mm08, and saving hard for an 06 or Whelen

AJ, I agree. There is so much overlap among the smaller cartridges from .243 - .30-06, that much of it just doesn't matter in the practical world.

If you've got a good 7mm-08, you don't need a .25-06 rifle.

Last year I saw Stephen & Storm use their 7's & 120's to do exactly the same thing I was doing with my .25-06 and 115's. Stephen had the .280, Storm had the 7-08. We each took a mule deer and a pronghorn, with one shot apiece. No difference in the field. Make a good shot and instant drop.

Stephen's .280 was tossing 120's somewhat faster than my .25-06 was throwing 115's.

Storm's 7mm-08 was moving the same 120's only a bit slower than my .25-06 loads.

All three were very comparable in capabilities.

I'm not one for "filling gaps" in rifle collections. The so-called gaps don't really matter. A .26 doesn't kill any different from a .24, .25, .27 or .28 cal rifle. They all do about the same thing. What I really like about that whole class of rifles is that they do it with modest recoil & report and usually very good accuracy.

Regards, Guy

Well said, Guy. Put the bullet in the right place, and cartridges in each of these calibres will kill like the hammer of Thor.
