Nosler Boxed Brass vs One Fired Factory

Has anyone noticed a different in the two?

I'm currently running once fired factory brass in a 28 Nosler and am seeing a larger variance in empty case weight than I'd like. Also an issue with work hardened necks is cropping up after just the initial firing. I've never seen that one before.

I must have different lots of 1x fired Nosler factory brass is my best guess

I've purchased new boxed Nosler brass for a few different cartridges & it was consistent.

I’ve had a few run ins with the same thing with Nosler brass. When I first got my 264 WM I’d gotten a few boxes of Nosler ammo. Well as time went on I’d gotten a bunch of 264 Nosler brass as well. Well eventually the different lots got mixed together. Me not knowing any better developed some loads that one day were shooting amazing and safe. Well the next time out it nearly locked the bolt and of course the primer fell out.

Well, I got to weighing and measuring I found a large difference between the two cases. When I say large, it was 30-50 grains weight difference and quite a lot internal capacity. This was years ago so I can’t recall exact details but the only difference I could see was the stamping was different for one than another.

I’ve pretty much given up on Nosler brass myself. Seems way too soft in the case head and the price is just insane to me. I have some old 338 Win Mag still around that’s been great but I bet I have had that brass for 15 years or better.

I'm seeing 2 different stamping fonts on these as well.

My case weight ranges were 260 grains up to 284

That’s quite a spread. I’d not tolerate it myself. Mixing them with 28 Nosler loads could be disastrous in my opinion.

Cull out the ones you have the least of and start there would be my opinion and what I’ve done a few times. It’s ashame to toss them but I like my nose, eyes, fingers, etc.

True enough. Just watched a video of a 50 bmg rifle disassemble itself all around the shooter. He was incredibly fortunate to walk away

I'm going to cull these by weight. And order 100 pc of Peterson brass.

I use Nosler brass for my 6.5 Creed since it was the only one I could find at that time, works so well and consistent banging steel out to 1000 yards, and I used Nosler brass for my old 7STW a ways back, it gave me the fits chambering new brass, half of the brass would not chamber after sizing. After several tries bumping more with different headspace in increments, still would not chamber, and the issue lies within the belt not being within specs. Contacted Nosler, and they seemed to accuse me of my rifle being out of specs after explaining to them that it works with all other different brands of brass except Nosler, they would not hear any of it and stood by their own product, so I was like " up yours " for not being understanding or helpful to help me solve the issue since I bought 3 boxes of that brass. So I tossed the brass that I opened from one box and sold the other two boxes. Stayed with my fired Rem brass and there was no issues with them until the barrel toasted and rechambered to 300 WM because there weren't any top quality brass at that time. I like quality brass because the flash hole is drilled, and not punched, less dings on the case body and mouths like Remington brass. Each time I ordered Rem brass back in the days, they come all dented that I had to round out the mouths to be able to size them.

I have read a few times that in the beginning Nosler did not make their brass , or did not make the entire line of brass , they used Silver State Armory . supposedly now all the Nosler brass is made by Nosler .

I've had a few problems with Nosler Brass , so now I don't buy it .

there is a lot of good brass out there . why fight with yourself by using second rate brass . I use and like , Lapua , Norma , ADG , Peterson .

It's why I use Lapua brass in all my rifles, except my 6.5 Creed which uses Nosler. As soon as my brass is toasted, I'm switching to Lapua.
Pistol brass I use Starline P+, great brass too.

I purchased my rifle used, he had put about 60 rounds down the barrel. That empty Nosler brass came with the rifle.

I knew this 1x Nosler wasn't a long term solution but thought why not experiment with it?

Turns out there are more variables in it than just being soft.
