Noticed my supply of ,30 cal 165 Nosler Partitions has gotten mighty low.... Have a small boatload of 165 solid-base bullets on hand thanks to Nosler's recent sale.

Am hoping (really intense hoping) to get drawn for a Wyoming mule deer tag for Nov 2007... Whatcha think for my .308 guys?

Go buy more 165 Partitions? Not The Most Accurate bullet from my rifle, but not bad.

Load shoot and be happy with the hundreds of 165 solid base bullets I've got on hand? They shoot real well...

Go buy 165 ballistic tips? They've performed well in the past...

Maybe 165 grain Accubonds? Have never tried 'em. Sort of a tougher ballistic tip I'd imagine.

Why the heck are there so many choices? The deer seem about the same now as always!

My rifle has a 24" 1:12 twist Krieger barrel. Shoots real well with 165's or 168's over Varget at different charges taking it from around 2700 fps to right about 2800 fps. Distinct possibility of a 200 - 400+ yard shot. All of the Nosler hunting bullets have shot well for me in the past.

Just thought I'd open it up to all you deer hunting types and get your input! Thanks, Guy

It's my understanding that the Solid Base bullet is the same construction as a BT minus the plastic tip. If it was me I would use the Solid base pills.

Hi ya Guy,
I do not envy your situation at all. I always question my bullet selection when I know there is noting wrong w/ the choice I made. I think that your flat base bullets will work w/ no problems on deer size game, I am sure many of deer have fell to this bullet. Best of luck on your drawing!

First of all buy a box of Partitions. Its only 50 bullets.

Then practice away with what you have of the less expensive ones.

I have found that the cheapest really accurate bullets are Sierras.

The reason for all of the new bullets is that new sells. As for myself I like the plastic meplats and in fact thats pulled me to Nolser and away from Sierra.

The AccuBond has been a superb bullet for me on deer.

I used the old 7mm Solid base on deer in the past in my 708 and liked them. No reason the new ones shouldn`t perform as well as the old. That said, I haven`t used the 30 cal solid base on game only paper.

Guy,

The 165 gr Solid Base is an excellent deer bullet and would be just about perfect in your 308 Win. If you have an accurate load you will be set.
Maybe you could test for expansion and penetration at expected hunting ranges by shooting into 6-7 gallon milk jugs filled with water and some water soaked phone books. The recovered bullets should give you confidence in your load.
You could also try the 165 gr AB which would make your 308 Win one swift and efficient killer for even the biggest Mule Deer.
Good luck getting that covetous tag.

One of my friends uses the 165 gr solid base bullet in his 300 weatherby for Rocky Mtn Elk in CO & gets one shot kills. It's adequate for Mule Deer,I use the 165gr sb in my Sako 06 & 300wm.
