On the fence with the WSM...

As of late, I have been giving some serious thought into my 7mm WSM. I am on the fence as to whether I really need it  :( . I have a 7mm08 that shoots lights out, and I just dont have time, or dare I say a need, for the WSM. It is a hell of a rifle, but alas...like the title says I am seriously contemplating selling her.

You're simply momentarily confused.

It isn't about need. Do you WANT it...that's the question. 7WSM is a right nifty and useful cartridge to want BTW>

Only for you to decide buddy. If your happy with your 7-08, and don't plan on stretching the WSM out, then you are probably right.

If you have some idea you might be hunting where shots are longer, then the 7mm WSM makes alot of sense.. I like it alot.

There are a couple of things that keep me thinking hard about it;
Cost of ammo: $40+ for one box at my local GS
Ammo availability: It seems very limited. All I have seen at my local GS is Federal and Winchester
And lastly, I dont reload nor will I be able to for some time still.

I really do like all I have heard about the 7 wsm...but how does it stack against a 30-06?

I love the 7mm WSM. However, it won't kill any deader than will a .30-06. The WSM is a great cartridge, but if you're happy with the 7mm-08, then there is little justification in keeping what you won't use.

Yeah, Mike nailed it. If you don't see yourself using it, then it is better served as trading fodder. It is pricey compared to the 7-08, that's for sure.

I am not thinking it gains a ton over a 30-06 till you are shooting further, with higher BC bullets, in that aspect, it starts to shine, but at that point, you are loading your own anyhow..

Hard to beat a 30-06. Lots of choices of ammo, both good deer ammo and premium stuff as well..

With the price of ammo now (and in the recent past) the 7 WSM is getting to be very much a reloader's game. I love mine but the 7mm-08 is no slouch either.

And this is why you own so many, Scotty?

Touché! A palpable hit, Ron. Well done.

I think the issue is, Scotty is afraid of the -06. That, and the 270'bee. He's scared he'll end up neglecting the other guns in his safe if he owns either one...

30-06 is just plain awesome...IMO.

I've always like the 7mm WSM and would like to have one, probably will sometime...but right now I need brass worse than a new rifle.

Regarding ammo costs, how much do you plan to shoot? A couple boxes a year wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Up from there and it becomes quite a factor. I have a 7WSM and I have a 7-08 for my daughter. Neither one will be finding a new home anytime soon. But if I didn't reload, I would have been second guessing the WSM. The thing is, 7-08 isn't a bargain basement priced ammo, either... not quite to WSM pricing, but when I see 7-08 on the shelf, it too reminds me why I reload.

Excellent summary of ammunition costs and assessment of purchase of a rifle.

Not being able to reload is the main thing that made me decide to send the WSM down the road.

What would you use the 7mm WSM for that you can't use the 7mm-08 for? Is the 7mm WSM going to be the hardest-hitting/fastest bullet you hunt with?

I sure know the "I want it, but don't really need it" part. Generally, I try to avoid caliber duplication with the exception of three .30 cal chambered rifles (308 Win, 30-06 M-1, and 300 Wby Mag) and calibers right next to each other, such as a 25-06 and a 6.5mm-06.

If the 7mm WSM is your "heavy" and the 7-08 is your "light" hunter then you've got it covered.

My light hunter is my 257 Roberts, medium hunter is my 30-06, and my heavy is my 300Wby.
I've been looking at the short mags for a while and they are fine for what they were intended to do.

I hope that I didn't overly influence you to buy that Model 70 Coyote in 7mm WSM.

I still think they're good rifles, and that the 7mm WSM is a mighty fine cartridge for longish range shooting & hunting.

I do have to admit though, that I don't use my .300 WSM Model 70 Coyote very often, despite having it nicely set up for med-long range hunting.

No flies on the 7mm wsm. My choice of all the WSM's

Whoa whoa whoa!!! I'm reading a little too much logic in this thread regarding duplicates and close calibers. Heaven forbid my wife actually catch wind of what you fellers are saying! My recommendation would be to own duplicates of every caliber so long as the 30-0Bland is avoided
