Oregon Spring Bear

Most farmers are appreciative when you take bears off their oat fields. The bears can be pretty destructive. I've counted as many as eleven bears on one field. A bear with lie down, and with their prehensile lips strip every grain off the stalks. They will literally clean the grain off of every stalk they can reach, and then roll to a point that they are able to begin again. The result is that where a bear has been feeding is virtually devoid of any grain and the stalks are flattened in a huge circle that is perhaps twelve to sixteen feet in diameter. The scat is simply grain formed into turds as they don't digest the grain efficiently. However, they do love oats and wheat. Barley seems to be less inviting, though they will eat barley. I watched a sow with two cubs one evening. The cubs were playing in the standing oats. However, the farmer had cut several swaths along the outer edge of the field and formed about four windrows of gain. The sow would lie on her stomach atop one of the windrows, eating every grain she could reach. Then, without standing, she wriggles forward to fresh grain and began again to feed. We watched her for over twenty minutes as she destroyed the windrow. Having said all that, the meat of these bears is great. The flavour is superb. It is dry, however, and must be kept moist as it is cooked.

Man, I cannot wait to taste some of your bear recipes Mike. That sounds too good! I have had ribs BBQ'ed and the hams cut as steak, with a bunch of gravy they are excellent. Scotty

All right, you guys have inspired me! I was always hesitant to shoot one as I wasn't too sure if they were any good. Only had sausage and pepperoni from my brother's bear. It was good, but wasn't sure i needed that much pepperoni lol! We have plenty of them in the Blues, so I guess I'll have to get serious about it this fall

I would hesitate to shoot a bear that had spent time in or around human civilisation. I wouldn't shoot bear that had been on a spawning stream or that had access to a garbage dump. However, bears that are feeding on grain, or berries, mast or clover provides excellent table fare.

Bear is some of the finest meat anyone can eat. I do love the ribs and the barbecue, and the meatloaf. Heck, it's all good.

My wife really has NO interest in eating deer but she asks me to please go bear hunting just to bring home something good to eat. I happy apply for tags every year in Wisconsin and Minnesota. This is the first year I haven't drawn a tag in a decade so I don't know what I will do to keep her happy this fall.

We really like to slow cook the roasts in the crock pot for a few hours with potatoes and carrots and an onion........mmmmmmm
