Partitions dont work, when they completely miss the elk!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess even a stone cold 13 year old can get the shakes and blow it!!!!
It was an awesome hunt and I wouldn't trade it for anything!

Everyone of us can report those sort of failures at one time or another. It is bad when they occur after decades of shooting!

Still a successful hunt in my book. Reassure the youngster, there will be more opportunities to come.

Sounds like a great hunt.

Tell the lad he's in good company - most of us have missed a shot now and again...

It happens to all of us at one point or another -

I can replay several of those over in my head time and time again & still don't understand how it happened.

The best part is you had a youngster out and about enjoying wildlife.
It's all about the experience - not the kill.

There is a 340 bull that still haunts me due to several "faulty" 150gr Partition golds out of my 270 win. I was 14, and am pretty sure that it has made me a way better shot today. If I had that 500 yard shot right now I colud make it with any gun in my safe!

Had a faullty 160 Ab out of the 280 AI the other day on a yote at 80 yards. Kind of funny how a guy gets humbled a bit every now and then.

You guys miss? Man, could have fooled me? Just kidding, add me to list of "failures"! Never with a Partition, but I have a couple strikes in my early years with shotgun slugs, and a cow elk with a Barnes X. Noslers have ALWAYS hit.. I am knocking on wood right now! Scotty

In 1961 as a 16 year old on my first deer hunt I missed numerous deer, standing, short range, long range you get the picture. Here's the good part " if you never hunt again you will never miss another animal" keep on hunting its part of life! Good luck and enjoy as many years as you can.

PS. Stay with the Partitions I did

A 308,7mm08, or 30-06 loaded with partitions would help build back his confidence and work just as good as the win mag out to 300 yards or so.

I'm in the same boat, I had a total failure of a 180AB out of my 30-06 while hunting cow elk at about the same range as you, nothing but air.

There are those that have missed and those that will.

Rich - Well said ! :lol

Jake - 80 yds ?? and you're admitting to that ? Hope he was in 6th gear with the turbo wound tight
