Perfect Pair of Model 70's

Well I haven't made it to cabelas yet. But I think I have pretty much settled on an extreme weather in 270 win. If they don't have one I could probably be talked into a 270 wsm.

I am a big fan of a 130 grain bullet for deer which is what I hunt the most and not many calibers sling a 130 grain like a 270 unless you go roy.

I have a VX3 4.5X14X40LR setting in the safe that needs a good home probably in some S&K rings and bases.

I also wondered what you guys thought about swapping that stock for an mcmillan edge to lighten it up some?? Other thing is how well do blind magazines work on a model 70??

I think that's a fine idea. Of course, I'm maybe not the best person to ask... I have two McSwirleys now, and two EDGEs on order for 700 Mountain Rifles, and McSwirleys on order for a 700SPS-V, my M70, my Howa, and one of the SS-ADLs I bought over Christmas break.

Get the 270WSM, it will be lighter than the 270 Win and have the ballistics of the Weatherby! Plus, it will hurl the 130gr bullets into the 3300+ range fairly easily. Scotty

beretz I was all set to take your advice but.....

First of all I broke the first rule of shopping at bass pro or cabelas never believe the idiot on the phone. It is about 45 minutes so I called to see what they had this week and they said they only had extreme weather's, so I had resigned myself to it.

I walk up to the gun counter and I count one, two, three stainless featherweights and no extreme weathers. They had 30-06, 270 win and 270wsm. I compared the 270 and 270 wsm. The wood on the 270 was terrific probably the best wood I have seen on a new sc winchester the wsm wasn't bad though either. The 270 wsm has the 24" barrel and the barrel profile was quite a bit larger near the action and weighed noticeably more than the 270 win. I kept trying to love the 270wsm but the 270 win had it all the balance, wood, and felt just right. Bad news was I didn't have quite as much in gift cards as I thought so I put it on layaway while I scramble up the remaining $200.

I guess that gives me a little more time to think about the setup. I started looking at the weights of the scopes and I think I might put that VX3 30mm on my m70 300 win and move the zeiss 3.5X10X44 to the 270. I really like the S&K rings and they are pretty lightweight does anyone else recommend some that might be better for this?

I will have to weigh my zeiss the catalog says about 14 or 15 oz but mine is an early one that might weigh more. Any other suggestions on the glass for lightweight if you think the zeiss is too heavy.

There is a huge ballistic difference between a .270 and a .270WSM, especially if you are looking at shots that will exceed 400 yards. I love the featherweights as well, and just bought a 300 WSM that is being rechambered to a 6.5 WSM. The difference in weight will not be that great unless it's primary use will be hunting sheep and goats at 10,000 plus feet. You already have a 300 Win Mag, so there isn't a huge need to fill a caliber gap with the 270 WSM. If the 270 felt right, you made a choice that makes you happy which is the main thing

Scope wise, there may be an ounce or two difference between the Zeiss and Leo scopes, so that will not be significant. I have the same Zeiss on a 300 WSM and love it. I do like the Leo 30mm sscopes, and have one on a 22-250 in the 4.5 - 14 variation. Look at both scopes in low light conditions (tough to do at a store sometimes) and see which one seems to have the best color contrast and light gathering capability. That would be my choice.

I have a few Featherweights. I certainly do like them. I do have the 270WSM, and it is a great rifle. I do not have a 270 Win, as years ago I bought a Featherweight chambered in 280 Rem. It has been hard for me to become excited about the 270 since I have a 280 and handload for it. Having said that, I believe you select a rifle much as I do--"Nice wood! I'll take it." "Do you need this calibre?" "What calibre? Nice wood, though." I can enjoy almost any cartridge if it has nice wood.

Good deal. Probably won't ever notice the difference between the 270WSM and 270 Win for most hunting. It is hard to walk away from nice wood though! Scotty
