I just got my first CC pistol a 9mm Luger and am using a set of RCBS carbide dies that I assume are roll crimp. my loads are functioning flawless so far. The die set is on loan from a friend. I'm getting my own set soon and a bit confused over roll vs taper crimp seating dies. Currently loading Rainier 115gr HP w/no crimping groove and what I would call a med. crimp and all seems well. Dose it really matter much roll vs taper crimp.?

I don't crimp 9mm or 45...

Don't overdo it belling the case mouth and no crimp is necessary.

If you do crimp they need to be taper crimped.... 9mm headspaces on the case mouth, if you over crimp it they won't headspace properly.

In many pistols they'll headspace off the extractor...but...just because they will, doesn't mean they should.

I use the Lee FCD for all my handgun ammo. Easy to use and helps with functioning in some guns.

Lee FCD works well for me. Just one more crank of the handle on the Lee Classic Turret press.

Yep I use the Lee Factory Crimp Die on all my semi auto calibers. It taper crimps and makes sure that the whole case is properly sized at the same time. Makes function almost flawless. I personally have used about all makes of loading dies over the past 36 years and in my experience Lee makes just as good a set of dies as the rest for general purpose pistol ammo. Get a 4 die set with the carbide sizing die that includes the FCD and you will be set.

Shot my .41 Magnum loads today that I loaded using the factory crimp die.

Found my load and will continue using the FCD from Lee. I'm using a pretty good crimp and while the load isn't "hot" it does pack a punch. I believe the FCD is helping by holding the bullet for a little longer helping to ensure better powder burn.

I didn't have my phone to post pictures as I burned the battery out taking videos of my neighbors shooting. It was their first time shooting and he, as an attorney, had some questions regarding firearms.

Taper crimp works great on a .45 ACP. Never needed or wanted a Lee FCD.

Excellent accuracy and reliability.

Remember that the .45 & 9mm headspace on the case mouth, so there has to be something there for that to happen.

Seems like your ammo is already flawless, so I think you've got it! (y)

I use the Lee Factory Crimp Die for my 357 Sig ammo too. I'll be looking for a FCD in .45 ACP soon as I need to load a bunch of them.

Been reloading pistol ammo for over 20 years and switched to a tapered crimp when I started reloading ammo for semi autos since they head space on the case mouth and haven't had any problems with my reloads since and have put 10s of thousands of .45 APC rounds down range when I shot NRA Bullseye competition and PPC matches all fired with a 1911 semi auto style pistols. Dillon pistol dies are your friend and a Dillion press will turn out a lot of ammo quick as long as you feed it supplies of bullets powder and primers.
