Man I have come up with some crazy results in this gun. I acquired it about a year ago but do to limited funds, it has been only recently that I have been able to take it to the range a test several different loads in it. The 130 grain handloads were all under an inch, I shoot three shot groups for everything, I am tight I guess. The 140 AccuBond put 6 shots in just over 1 inch though but the velocity was barely averaging 2900 fps. Now here is where it gets interesting, the 150 Partitions with two different kinds of powders shot terrible. The first was with H4831SC and the second with RL22. The smallest they shot was 2.5 inches for three shots!!! I was stumped. Yet I loaded up some Sierra Gameking 150grain over 55 grs of RL22 and they were back down to around an inch. Go figure, guess it doesnt like partitions. Oh well, I wanted to shoot the light weights in it anyways. I have a 30-06 if I need a heavier bullet.

Am guessing it's a .270 Winchester. Looks like you'll just have to be happy with the 130's or 140's - not that such a choice is all bad.

What kind of velocity are you getting with your 130 grain loads?

Yeah its a 270 Winchester. Thought I had mentioned that but I see I didnt. I get like 3025 fps on average which for me is just fine, I dont see the need for burning the throat out any faster than I should. Plus these loads shoot well and so that is a lot nicer than a few extra fps at the muzzle. I would trust my loads for any non dangerous game on this continent except moose. I have a lot of confidence in my skills and in the 270 Winchester as a round. I am no fool though, I have bigger guns and use them quite often even for elk. Elk at reasonable distance are just as dead with my 270 or 30-06 as they would be with a 458 Mag.

I don't find it unusal that a certain barrel does not shoot well with some bullets, but does an excellent job with others. And like you said, for heavier bullets, go with your 30-06.
IMO 130gr. bullets is where the .270Win. really shins. For mule deer and pronghorns, I like the Sierra SPBT 130gr. bullet, pushed by 55gr. of IMR4350. The MV chronied 3205 fps and I was getting inside 2" groups at 200 yds. shooting off a bench rest.
