powder recommandation please... 7mm wsm

MagPro ha worked well for me with 160 AB and 160 grain Sierra HPBT. IMR 4007 SSC , IMR 4350 and IMR 7827 SSC have worked well with other 160 grain bullets.

Reviewing loads for my WSM, velocities with 160 grain bullets range from 2840 to 3030 fps. All have worked very well on game. There was more than enough velocity to cleanly take game with each of these loads. My 160 AB load, which I use most, generates 2980 fps, and works very well on game.

Even 2800 fps is more than enough velocity with a 160 grain AB to knock down moose, elk, black bear. I would not be overly concerned about using such a load for grizzly.

Reloader 17 is supposedly made for the wsm case. I have some, and I am going to try it in my 300 wsm. I already have them loaded up. I just need to find time to go shoot them.

I wonder how H1000 and Retumbo might work out of the 7WSM with heavier bullets. My 270WSM really shoots well with RL22 and IMR7828 with 150gr bullets. RL17 is probably pretty good too. Mike has had some really excellent results with his 270WSM and RL17. You should be able to get all of 2950-3000 out your WSM with a 24" barrel. Sounds like a nice rifle. Good luck. Scotty

Actually, if you have some on hand, IMR4350 works surprising well in WSM cases. It might be worthwhile getting some RL17 and comparing load density and velocities since they are very close in burning rate. There have been mixed reviews on whether RL17 does provide any advantage over IMR powders, especially the new IMR powders in that burning rate class.

It is hard to tell if I would gain anything over using RL22 or even MAGPRO. Overall, MAGPRO has done really well for me, but it is much harder to get than the Alliant powders, plus, RL22 works in the 7mm Rem, 300 Win, 338 Win Mag. I guess the 4350 series either H or IMR would be good in my 338 also, but then again, RL19 works really well in my 338 Win Mag, producing awesome accuracy and excellent speeds. Scotty

Scotty, my main powder for all the slightly overbores is IMR 4350 in several from the .243 Win to the .30-06. I have finally suceeded (me and Elkman) to get down to 4 powders in inventory. This keeps it simple and makes life less onerous after elections for Librals, when no components can be bought for 18 mnths afterward.

63 - 66 gr rl 22 and 160 AB. Mine did 3050 fps and 3/4" @ 100 yards.

I could get by with RL15, RL19, RL22 for everything I have. Not including my 44 Mag! Those three actually do fairly well with about everything I shoot. Scotty

M also I can now go with IMR 3031, 4064, 4350 and 7827 SSC and have everything that I need from .45/70 to .340 Bee. So Simple!

It's hard to justify the expense of the darn stuff, but I've had great results with Viht N-165 out of my .270wsm.

Powerstroke,

One could do far worse than having a good selection of Vihtavuori powders. Among powders that I find I use a lot are VN135 (358, 356), VN560 (7mm WSM, 300 WSM, 7mm RM), VN550 (300 WSM), VN160 (280, 30-06) and VN165 (280, 7mm RM, 30-06, 300 WSM). These tend to give me excellent velocities, burn cleanly and generated tight groups.

Mark, do you shoot all V-series of powders? Seems like you get some excellent speeds and great accuracy. Just wondering if you shoot it cause of convenience or just because it is that much better than other powders. Scotty

Scotty -

When I was given my .280 I couldn't find anything that it liked. Not sure how I ended up trying some N-165 through it, but it turned it into a whole new gun. As Mike stated it burns very very clean in my opinion. I can't say velocity is great with the N-165, but I'll sacrifice some of that for accuracy. Playing with N-165 in my .257Bee right now too.
That in turn made me try some N-140 in my 22-250 & 7-08. Both calibers seem to work very well with it, with good velocity. The .260's don't like it, but the N-560 gives some phenominal velocity in the .260.

I've also found them to be very stable - Shooting conditions vary in the summer from 4 thousand foot elevations and 90 to 100 degree temps to the next three months that will be @ 10 to 13 thousand feet and potentially twenty below.

Mark,

I have burned quite a bit of N165 in my 280 behind 139/140 grain bullets. It works very well for me. 59 grains behind a 140 grain BT gives me some excellent groups. You are correct that there are other powders that will give me more velocity, but VN165 does produce some fine groups.
