Just wanted to post a few pictures and give some detail on a p-dog shoot over the weekend with Jeff in Montana. Jeff was gracious to offer a chance to come shoot with him at a ranch close to his house.

I had my eyes opened up to a whole new level of precision shooting from a field standpoint watching Jeff do his "dial a dog" shooting with NF scopes and drop charts  . The new rifle he was just breaking in was a custom 6.5 X 47 Lapua built on a BAT action, but the .223 rifle was an over-the-counter Tikka that he bought used from a guy that said it didn't shoot well  . He was nice enough to let me have all the 300 yard and in shots, and focused on the 500 plus targets to make it fair :) .

Set up and ready to shoot...checking drop charts:

947 yard shot with the Lapua and 140 grain bullet:

Jeff is letting them know that he is done shooting and they can come out a play again...

We went out to Jeff's personal range Monday morning to shoot some steel. He has targets from 100 to 1050 yards. The 1050 yard target is 10" by 12", and is really small at even 22 power in the NF scope. I managed to hit it a couple times after the dope was dialed in. Jeff than shot a group of 3 shots under 2 inches, with 2 shots less than 1/4 inch apart :!: ...talk about the nut behind the bolt  . Looking forward to doing this again soon!!

Looks like you guys had a good time. I will try my best and find time in the future to hit a PD town with you buddy.

Okay, that is so wrong on so many levels that you would not invite the rest of us! Glad you had a great time. That sure looks like fun. Those elk won't stand a chance this fall will they.

Yeah, I think this is going to get good!

It sure looked like you had a great time :) Big gophers at over 900 yards that is some shooting.
If I shot something that far away and had to walk to get it I would need to take a lunch & overnight bag!
I should be getting to the farm in the next month or so and I am going to warm up the 204 the 17 hmr and the good old Cooey 22lr.

Blessings,
Dan

The first one is on order!!

What no 45-70......!??? :) yeah, you're right those sage rats would have heard those big hunks of lead falling toward them and made it to cover. Still would have been interesting  Looks like you had a great time. Officially jealous, welcome home. CL

thanks for coming out joel your welcome here anytime. for the record i apologize for the form on the one picture where the gun is straight and i am kicked off the the side that was taken late on the second day and i was getting lazy. had a great time had been awhile since i had gone out and shot prairie dogs, great practice on small targets. the group stated at 1050 was two touching and the third about four inches low but that doesnt matter because it was only three shots so it doesnt count anyway  joel shot very well the cooper was sounding off like it was a semi auto with a belt feed! am waiting for cerakote on the 6.5x47 when finished i will post a build sheet pictures and cost if your interested. oh yeah the reason i was looking in that whole was the fact i had blown a drumstick off one at 930 and was seeing if he died in the hole. the tikka worked well making shots at the 400 yard mark was consistant, a cold bore clean barrel 600 plus was done on the second day, the 75gr amax turns that 223 into a totally different animal. again joel thanks for coming out and posting the pics.

The real question I want to know is did you burn up all those rounds you loaded?

 Not quite all of them! I got too busy watching Jeff wack some of those way out there doggies and was having fun ranging for him. I mainly shot the .204, so most of those are gone (think there are about 120 left). I only went through about 150 rounds of 22-250 ammo before that was retired to the truck. The 6.5WSM came out for a little while just to see how it would perform. Those 130 grain Sciroccos make a mess and put new meaning into the term "airborne"!

It is amazing how fast the yotes, eagles and crows clean up a dog town that has been shot. There must have been a few yotes that were laying around with full bellies after this weekend. We had one golden eagle that was hanging around lots of crows/ravens.

"Great Post" I loved it. Great shooting guys, those are very small targets at any distance.
