QL Request: 308 165 I4350

I know that the Varget burn speed (4064, RL15, etc) is the ideal powder for this, but I have a big ole jug of I4350 that’s begging to get tried out in this rifle. So far I’m below max speed with RL15 at one accuracy node, so if I lose a few FPS from book max using this powder it won’t hurt me. I’m just thinking about trying it and I can’t find any book loads.

Looks as if you can get a max charge with the IL, but you will have some difficulty with either of the Nosler bullets.
 
Excellent! Actually a little better than I thought. I’d be thrilled with 2700+ FPS since I’d be able to shoot it cheap. I really appreciate it
 
This thread brought back a good memory for me. About 20 - 24 years ago I had some IMR 4350 to use up, and had recently purchased what has become the 308 Win "Green Machine."

Looked at my 1989 Nosler Number 3 reloading manual, which was pretty current then... And saw to my surprise that there were several IMR4350 loads. So I gave 'em a try. I was pleased with the accuracy and set aside one box of loaded cartridges without trying them. Some years later I got my first chronograph and tested them. Oh my goodness... From the 24" barrel (can't remember if that was the Remington barrel or the first Krieger) the velocities were impressive!

2700+ fps with 180 gr Sierras! That's right up there or even a bit beyond a normal 30-06 factory load!

The 165's were pushing 2800 fps...

I didn't repeat the loads ever, but I did file them away and kept the Number 3 manual for reference.

I wonder why more reloading manuals/databases don’t list load data for it? Hodgdon/IMR doesn’t even list it. It really seems like it’s as good or better than some of the more commonly used powders for the 308. I’m actually very excited to find out about this and am looking forward to trying it out, and hoping for good accuracy and velocity. I got this caliber for simplicity, and was hoping to avoid buying other powders to try in it. I have partial containers of many powders that I will try out and “use up” in it, but I4350 is a staple in my powder cabinet. Thank you again
 
For what it's worth, the Speer #11 manual lists 48 - 52 grs. of IMR 4350 for the .308 Win, 165 gr. bullets. They also list an velocity of 2755 fps. @ 52 grs.
