1:12 twist in a 20" barrel (Savage 99)

Three bullets look interesting:
Nosler 51165 CTBTRN 150gn
Hornady 3027 FTX 135gn
Or 30395 FTX 160gn
Hornady Monoflex 140gn #3033

Looking for effective energy under 150 yards.

Let's keep this simple. Just use 30-30 Winchester data.
BTW, if you do not have dies, I have a set of Redding dies with shell holder. I no longer have any rifles in .303 Savage.

Yes, realizing 3030 and 303 are similar.
I'm wondering with this short barrel, will we be able to get enough velocity for the bullets to open.

I was able to get Lee dies in 303 including the factory crimp. Most people I'd tell to retire it, but a small 11 year is hunting using his great grandfathers gun.

Their last remaining 7 shells are 190gn silver tips. I figure the are down to 1500 fps when they hit. They get pencil hole exit wounds.

I was only able to get most of the data except with Leverevolution or with Hornady 3027 FTX 135gn

Hope that helps.

Never did chronograph the last one I had with factory ammo. Killed deer quite well out to about 150 yards. It had an 18" barrel. IIRC, I got 1900 FPS shooting the RCBS #30-180-FN cast bullet that weighed 190 gr. in my alloy. It too worked well on deer.

[emoji1], the guy I'm helping, this is his first reload, so he's learning a lot. We're going to disassemble some loads we made based on the old Lyman manual from the 60's. For imr 4831 it said start at 33, go up to 36. QL forecasted the max at 32.8 assuming average powder lot performance.

I think we'll get up running the 160 FTX. Their BC and weigh will hold lethal energy out to 250 yards.

Thank you Paul and TackDriver!

FWIW, I don't think you can get enough of either 4831 in a .303 Sav. case to be a problem. Just way too slow burning for that size case.
