Thank you Dr. Mike! Still, looking at the 59-61 grain loads, it might serve it's purpose.

You might be ab le to get in 64 grains. It will be a compressed load, however.

Part of the reason I'm looking at some 'non-normal' powders is to save my shoulder. Injury has me changing some loads out.
I'm playing with some Varget loads to see how they work for recoil in the M-70 and thought I'd look at RL 23 since I see folks playing with the RL-22. Though the two aren't really the same.

I'll try and report back on what I find out.

Thanks again, DrMike.

Tried it last night at 59 grains. Filled the case up to the mouth of the case. 64 grains would be extremely compressed.
Back to the drawing board.

Bbear - I've had shoulder surgery - and am working now with a fellow who has badly banged up shoulders.

His old favorite .30-06 is just too much for him. We're looking at alternatives:

1. Muzzle brake, the good ones seriously cut recoil. Shop carefully. Some are more obnoxious than others.

2. Smaller cartridge, he's going to try my .25-06 and 6mm rifles. If he was after deer, either one would be perfect. He's thinking elk to roughly 200 yards, and that's certainly possible.

Good grief!

Dr Mike - that 64 grain load you mentioned is serious!

114% case fill--yeah, that is full. On a few powders, you can JUST get in 114% (primarily larger stick powders). Ball powders? Fine cut stick powders? Fuggetaboutit!

Yea, I've put one 30-06 back in the safe. A Mtn rifle my Dad bought years ago. This Mod. 70 is heavier and should work out to a lower FELT recoil than the 7 lb Mtn rifle.
I sold my Blaser 300 WM and got a 264 WM. Felt recoil is quite a bit less on that and yet I hated giving up the Blaser.
That 25-06 should be the ticket for your friend. I have 2 of them and both are soft-shooters. I've even taken 2 elk with one of mine pushing the 120 gr partitions out of it. Right now my 'go-to' load for one of them is RL 26 at about 3050 fps and a 117gr SGK. The other likes the 110 AB (whenever Nosler decides to make some) pushed by 52 gr of RL 19.
The RL 19 load isn't one I can shoot in the summer time down here as the heat really warms that load up to being too hot.

I really do appreciate you running the QL for me and for others.

I think you might find Varget ok for softer shooting loads. I use it with 130-150g loads in the 30-06 and it's accurate and mild for younger or inexperienced shooters.

Don't discount H4895 for the same purpose as well, even with your preferred 165g bullets.
