I have been offered the opportunity to possibly go to Idaho for an elk/deer /bear hunt in the future. What are the procedures for obtaining a non residence license, and are there any youth licenses available?
Don't know for sure when but we will probably be starting out from the Rexburg area, as that is where my friend lives.
How is the Elk and mule deer and bear? I have whitetails here, so I don't want try for those unless the are MONSTERS!
Thanks in advance

JDMAG, I believe you can obtain licenses/tags through he IDFG web site. I always get mine through the website, but I am a resident. AS for the Rexburg area, you may encounter whitetail, but it's predominantly muley territory. I believe the elk hunt is good as well.

About the youth licenses, check the website, I think they do, but a person must be 12 years old to hunt big game in ID.

I also read the other day that ID is considering raising the prices, non-resident license/tag are taking the brunt of the increases. Juast an FYI.

Oh, I am currently in CA on active duty, but ID is my state of residence, with Idaho Falls as my home town. Rexburg is about 25 miles north of IF.

Most elk/deer hunts are OTC. You can put in for a controlled hunt, but.......

Find out what unit your friend will be taking you to and then reference the IDFG website to see what hunts there are and when the season opens.

from Rexberg, I would head to Pocatello and hunt up the Mink Creek drainage. Home to plenty of good mulies and elk. you should be able to easily nock both down there and quality animals too. I used to work for an outfiitter in SE ID for 8yrs and we always had good success there for combo hunts. Also, the Massacre Rocks area doesn't look like much, (high desert and 5' high sage brush) but is home to the biggest mulies I have ever seen. Not many of them, but monsters. They'll lay in the sage brush and let you walk right by them. The way we killed them was cut a BIG track and track those bucks in the sand and shoot them in there beds. They think they are hidden and will lay right there. most shots -75yds. Different type of mulie hunting in the MR area, but truely worth it. Idaho Falls, Pocatello, American Falls is were I would concentrate. Don't tell anyone, SE Idaho is where it's at. There is also a late season mule deer hunt in the Tex Creek drainage that is a draw, its a tough draw, but one of the few places were you can still find a true 30"+ mulie. We'd look over 20-25 bucks a day there until we found Mr. Right....usually 30"+

Here is a portion of an article from The Hunting Report written about the outfitt I guided for:
Well, outfitter Ridge Taylor did it again. Seems one of his California clients, Shannon Stuart, has taken an excellent mule deer buck that grosses 200 6/8 B & C points and nets over 198 points! Stuart killed the buck in southern Idaho while being guided by Cash Taylor. Taylor's clients also took two other bucks this past year - one with a 34-inch spread and the other in the 29-inch range. Long-time subscribers know I recommended laying off this state a while back after the bad winter of 1992/93. Then last year I reported on that huge buck Dr. Larry Barr took with Taylor - a new No. 3 in the B & C book and No. 1 in the SCI records. This makes the second year in a row that Taylor has been able to produce some great bucks for his clients in Idaho, reinforcing my opinion that the state once again deserves the attention of trophy hunters....

Shhhh! Not so loud... I like keeping Idaho my nearby secret for hunting and fishing...

Idaho is a nice state. I've been to Pocatello a few times, even been to the Green T. :? Good luck with the future hunt opportunity JDMAG.

Thanks for the input. It's and old martial arts buddy that made the invite. I dont think he hunts much , but has clients who do. I've been to his dojo to teach a class or two and was invited out to a students house to do some shooting. That "kid" had more fire arms than I do!
Lookin forward to getting back out there and trying out the game!
