Quick Load Request 300 Savage

So you know I'm not doing something crazy... Just bought a new to me 700 Classic in 300 Savage. All the data out there is for the older guns with weaker actions like the Savage 99's. Would like to at least be able to get a little out of the smart little cartridges.

Nosler Ballistic Tips for both loads. Thanks!

Also, how much do you find yourself using Quickload? I've been contemplating buying it for just this type of project. It seems it would be nice to be able to corolate pressures to my chronographed speeds.

I use QL on almost every cartridge I work with. I use it to find other potential powders, to see suggestions of nodes, to tweak pressure limits, etc.

Code:
Cartridge : .300 Savage
Bullet : .308, 125, Nosler BalTip 30125
Useable Case Capaci: 46.592 grain H2O = 3.025 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.600 inch = 66.04 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch = 558.8 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Maximum Pressure: 58500 psi, or 403 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 112 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

Not quickload, but I have some real world experience with your application. I won't quote my loads, lest somebody try them in a weaker action, but we were getting 2800 fps with a 150 gr Speer BTSP out of a Rem 722 using slightly above Lyman book loads with IMR 4064 and Win 748. Both dense powders and worked very well in the compact .300 sav case with very little compression and fine accuracy.

If you are not shooting very long, try the Lapua Mega 150sp. Short, compact bullet will make the most of your case capacity. Low BC will hold it back past 150 yards though. This shares a similar profile to the old Speer Mag tip which is my go-to bullet in .300 Sav and .308 win for woods hunting.

When you get a chance, take a look at this page:

http://ataleoftwothirties.com/?p=1026

I used the LVR in loading up for my Dad's 300 Savage using Speer 150s, and it worked out very well. The LVR keeps pressure low in any chambering, yet you get the speeds you would expect. I would not hesitate to use it with the 150 Nosler BT at all.

I know it's not a "usual" powder for the 300 Savage, but I would agree with the assessments shown on the page I linked.

One of the advatages is that due to LVR's pressure curve, brass will last longer than with some other powders. There is one shooter on the Marlin forum who has 35+ reloads on the same piece of brass with no issues, 20+ on many other pieces.

Man, I need to break my granddads old 300 out and work it some. Love that little cartridge.
