I am new to this group and trying to find my way around. What I am doing is starting down the road of finding a load for my Seekins PH3 in 7PRC with a 22in barrel and Omega300 suppressor. I am looking to have it be as accurate as possible out to 600 yards and work in a range of temps from 90deg down to 15deg. If someone can help me with maybe a QuickLoad chart and/or any personal wisdom, that would be wonderful. I worked up two initial loads in Gordons and their results are attached in the pics. From looking at things though, it seems those grain weights are over book max. Just for the record though, I had zero pressure signs in shooting those on a 70 degree day.

If you’re not seeing pressure and you’re not over book velocities then I wouldn’t worry about it. Both of those powders should be excellent for what you’re trying to do and honestly if they shoot for you, that 175 ABLR has creeped in to become my favorite 7mm bullet for my 7 Mashburn Super. Such an effective elk and deer bullet.

So what is your thoughts on what you see in the groups and velocity’s? Do you see a charge range you would consider testing further? I had someone else tell me that when you see the velocity flatten out or drop in one shot ladders, that tends to lead to higher ESs when you shoot groups.

Looks like 8,9,10, is the best group. With Retumbo. Same with H1000. You will usually see 2 nodes 1 at the lower end of charge weight and 1 at the higher end.

Not saying it’s right or wrong, but most of the speeds that “flatten” at the top end of the loads are usually useful for me. I’ve been tricked so many times seeing a node lower down the ladder that just wasn’t great for ES. Being as there is about a grain between your two nodes with Retumbo I’d almost try both of them. Both the recorded speeds are practical top end.

Same for the H1000 load at the top end. That looks like a good one. I sorta think seeing it flatten is a component of load density which makes the slow burning powders happy at the top end of the pressure curve.

I could be all ate up, but that is what works for me.

Sako2 and SJB358 gave great advice for you. I have loaded for (6) different 7 PRC rifles (22" and 24" tubes), and all of them love the H1000 with 67.5 to 68 grains of powder. Have only loaded 175 grain bullet for each rifle with velocities at 2900 to 2950 fps (using Athlon Radar). All of these rifles shoot 1/2 MOA at 600 yards very consistently. In my experience, the best way to lower ES/SD is by adjusting seating depth. Now that you have some node/charges to follow, I would suggest adjusting seating by .005" and see what that does. ABLR shoot like solids and seem to like a jump, but closer seating depth may lower ES/SD.

That’s spot on as well in regards to seating depth. My gun loves .075 off. Just hammers right there.

Should I be concerned though that the upper end of the ReTumbo charge is nearly 5 grains more than the load you reference? I don’t have pressure signs, but I do know with good brass it may be over pressure and not show it. The last thing I want is to be unsafe. If I didn’t say it above, I am using ADG brass.

Dr Mike, would you mind running QuickLoad Data for me on my set up with these powders and any others you think may be worth considering.

Thank You.

Here is the load data from Hodgon for Retumbo. I am not a huge fan of running over book on powder charges, but velocity usually will tell more about pressure (in addition to ejector marks, primer flattening/craters, etc.) Please note the 67.5 to 68 grains of powder I use is for H1000 power only.

Yeah. That’s what has me worried. I don’t see any signs on the brass and didn’t have any hard bolt lifts, but 3 grains over is a lot. I love that top end speed, but I may need to test the ReTumbo/71.20 load and H1000/68.50 and go from there.

Matching Maximum Pressure: 65000 psi, or 448 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 110 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

So I know the programs are not 100% accurate but on your data, it shows ReTumbo at 110% of fill capacity with 69.80 grains. We were able to load 73 grains in there without it being a heavy compressed load. The pressure it is showing in your program is 58,438. I am guessing that is saying that you will fill the case before you hit full pressure. Again, how are we able to load more and since we can, how do we find out what our actual max load is?
