I have a .223Rem Bolt action , 1 year old Shilen 26" Bl. , 1:8" twist; Wylde Chamber.
I have been using IMR8208 with a Hornady 60gr VMax , 3150f/s . That load is over Hodgdon max. , but safe in my rifle when loaded to 2.254" COL ( around 5mils off the start of the throat ) . I am looking for more consistent accuracy at 200 and 300 yards over temp. changes. Started a load workup with AA2495 : 25.1gr @ 41F , 3102f/s ,CCI400. ; 25.3gr @62F , 3129f/s , CCI450. The 3rd range session may be 10 days out due to cold rain and wind . I have loaded 25.5gr ,and found that powder compression force causes a ding in the bullet tip about 2 mils deep . The accuracy node appears to be around 25.3gr , but velocity is 100f/s slower than expected ( 3175 to 3250f/s).I am ready to consider other stick powders that burn clean ( Near 100% ). Case capacity: 30.53gr water ; Hornady 60gr VMax 22281; COL : 2.259" ; Max. pressure 58,000psi ;
Node 3 @ 1.106ms ; 85% to 106% Fill . ( Wylde chamber can use Full Nato pressure , but I choose not to for brass life ) . Alliant AR Comp is on my list to buy and try . Any comments on throat wear with high Nitroglycerine content vs single base ? A list of alternate powders to try would be appreciated. Also considering Nosler 60gr BT instead.
