My son Jeff has been wanting to get one more rifle to suppliment his 6mm Remington. (Wonder where he get's that from? ) He wants one for the bigger stuff and narrowed it down to the Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather SS in 300 WSM. I found a new one at a shop here in town for $969.00. I got the salesman to throw in a set of Leupold two piece bases and rings for it no charge! Jeff had a lot of the $969.00 saved. so I took his cash and added to it and picked the rifle up for him today. It's going to be his birthday present in April, but I am not sure I'll be able to hold out that long to give it to him, or blow the whistle on myself. I worked some extra overtime to come up with what he didn't have saved. It's worth it as Jeff got straight A's on his last report card and he's a great kid. He deserves it and has worked hard for this all last summer.

I took it home and pulled the action out of the stock and wiped everything off and inspected it closely. I then reassembled it and cleaned out the bore. I sat in front of the television with a couple A-Zoom snap-caps in the magazine and ran them through it over and over and dry fired it to get the trigger broke in a bit before we ever take it to the range. It helps seat them in and if there's any adjustment to be made later to one's liking, it's a little easier. I tried not to drool on it too much.......

Now he just has to work this summer and save his money and buy a scope for it. Having just worked up a load for my friends Model 70 300 WSM and 180gr. Accubonds a year ago, I have a pretty good place to start.

By getting him this rifle, I guess that means the 6mm Remington bolt rifle I wanted to build will have to be put on the back burner a little longer. It's worth it though and besides I have a 6mm Remington in a #1B. What more could a guy ask for :!: GUY, the number 1 also has a 6x42mm Leupold on it. I knew you would like that!

Nice rifle and chambering. Congratulations to your son.
Let us know what glass he goes with and how she shoots.
IMHO, the Leupold VX-3 2.8-8x36mm would be an excellent choice. The B&C reticle just might make it perfect.

JD338

JD338- Scopes, you nailed it! I was thinking either the 2.5-8x36mm or the 4.5-14x40mm either one with the B&C reticle (It sure worked great on his cow elk this year at 350 yards!) or might even have Leupold make one and put the stadia lines in it for the velocity and B.C. of the 180 gr. Accubonds that I hope will shoot great out of it. I'll say this for myself and for GUY as well, but a 6x42mm would not be so horrible either!

Congratulations to Jeff on a sweet rifle. Of course, I'm not biased, but Winchesters rock! I have had great success with a wide variety of rifles chambered in 300 WSM. I haven't shot a dog yet. Jeff sounds as if he is a great fellow, and good on him for earning high marks in school. He'll never regret the discipline.

That is a sweet gun. My buddy here bought one in 270 WSM he loves it!

Congrats to your Son on a fine rifle and great caliber !

However -
If I recall correctly, the first step to RADD is admitting you have an issue Sir - At this point it appears you are still in denial and pushing this one off on your Son ? 8)

Can't wait to see the range results ......

That should be a fine rifle, sounds like he earned every bit of it. If your looking at the 2.5-8x36 and the 4.5-14x40 why not go with the 3.5-10x40 W/ B&C. I have one on my 338 WM and it is one of myfavorite scopes.

Very cool. A 6mm and a .300 WSM combo should set him up just fine for mice to moose!

Guy

Everyone knows what one of these looks like, but here's a belated photograph anyway.

That is certainly one we will consider as well. The 3.5x10-40mm is a great one too with just a bit more than the 2.5x8 power scope. I have a feeling it's going to come down to the 3.5-10x40mm or the 4.5-10x40mm. Any of those three would be super, but then again I personally like the fixed 6x and have never felt compromised on short shots or long ones. In fact the longest shots I have ever made or taken were with 2- 4x scopes and 1-6x scope used. That's what I use though so it makes sense that would be the scopes used on my longest shots.

My dad has a Model 70 7mm Mag from 1972 (that shoots great), and aside from that and this 38 WCF (38-40) that my dad gave me, this will be the first new Winchester in my house anyway. I've sure read a lot of good things about the new Winchesters and I hope it's true. I am quite sure my son is going to be very happy. Thanks for all the kind words. When she's scoped and we are getting her broken in I'll post some range results.

6mm -

This is coming from a pretty solid 700 guy, but Winchester is doing a knock-out job with these new M70s. I just picked up my second one...

Congrats not only on the rifle, but on the work ethic you've instilled in your son. TR wrote that "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at something worth working hard at."

Handing that down to your kids is an enormous contribution to society, and we as a society are grateful.

Man, that is an awesome birthday present. I am glad your boy worked so hard for it and I bet it is going to be a phenomenal shooter too. What a great combo of cartridge and rifle. I am totally taken aback by the new M70's (and heck, the old ones too). I can't wait to hear about how it shoots.

Are you sure you can't steal a 6x42 Leupold from another rifle, just to "test" it for us. No need in making the boy suffer about thinking if his rifle is a shooter or not? Right? Great job buddy. Glad you choice Winchester! Scotty

I do have a 6x42 I could pull from my 6mm to check it out. That does sound awful tempting!!

A straight 6x is a great kids. Scope. Nothing for him to monkey with. All he needs to do is put the crosshairs on the target and pull the trigger.

Might as well develop a load for him right! That way he really has his mind set on working to get his new scope. Looking forward to hearing how the rifle shoots. Seems like everyone I have heard of is a real shooter. I just handle a few of them the other day and seem like excellent all around rifles ready for any condition. Scotty
