My son Jeff has been wanting to get one more rifle to suppliment his 6mm Remington. (Wonder where he get's that from? ) He wants one for the bigger stuff and narrowed it down to the Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather SS in 300 WSM. I found a new one at a shop here in town for $969.00. I got the salesman to throw in a set of Leupold two piece bases and rings for it no charge! Jeff had a lot of the $969.00 saved. so I took his cash and added to it and picked the rifle up for him today. It's going to be his birthday present in April, but I am not sure I'll be able to hold out that long to give it to him, or blow the whistle on myself. I worked some extra overtime to come up with what he didn't have saved. It's worth it as Jeff got straight A's on his last report card and he's a great kid. He deserves it and has worked hard for this all last summer.
I took it home and pulled the action out of the stock and wiped everything off and inspected it closely. I then reassembled it and cleaned out the bore. I sat in front of the television with a couple A-Zoom snap-caps in the magazine and ran them through it over and over and dry fired it to get the trigger broke in a bit before we ever take it to the range. It helps seat them in and if there's any adjustment to be made later to one's liking, it's a little easier. I tried not to drool on it too much.......
Now he just has to work this summer and save his money and buy a scope for it. Having just worked up a load for my friends Model 70 300 WSM and 180gr. Accubonds a year ago, I have a pretty good place to start.
