Hey Scotty I finally made it to the range. I had already loaded up some 180gr Hornaday SP Interlocks that I had before I broke my ankle so that's what I shot along with my Savage 99 in .308 to test my handy work I did on the stock.
The old Savage did ok by it's self with some middle of the road 165gr loads and open sights. My taget backer was made of masonite and it would rip up the targets when a bullet passed threw it so I grabed a plastic advertising road sign that litters the shoulder of the road and used it for my final shots. The masonite showed a group around 3" at 100yds for the old Savage which surprised me because I wasn't expecting it to shoot that good.
My bench was an old office desk that was too low and I had to stack 4 sand bags on top of my range box which is a converted fishing tackle box and the rifle butt was left unsupported and not very solid. I still managed some groups around 2 inches from what I could tell on the masonite with my 300Wby Vanguard. Not satisfied I turned the target stand around and stapled the plastic sign to it and the target on top of it.
The first loads were with IMR 4831 which produced .75" groups in this rifle under 165gr Hornaday SP Interlocks before I broke my ankle and load 78.5 and 79.5 grs under a 180 gr Hornaday Sp Interlock.
Wheatherby would publish loads in their catologs so I decided to try some of thier ancient loads.
The first one I tried on the new pastic backer was H4350 79.5grs under a 180gr Hornaday Sp Interlock. This load of 3 shots went into 4.31" x 8.8". Makes me wonder what it will do off a good rest. I had to stop because the toe of the stock was kicking me pretty good and had my shoulder sore and still have a small goose egg from it. Plus I was shooting in a tee shirt and 80 degree temps.
