Hey Scotty I finally made it to the range. I had already loaded up some 180gr Hornaday SP Interlocks that I had before I broke my ankle so that's what I shot along with my Savage 99 in .308 to test my handy work I did on the stock.
The old Savage did ok by it's self with some middle of the road 165gr loads and open sights. My taget backer was made of masonite and it would rip up the targets when a bullet passed threw it so I grabed a plastic advertising road sign that litters the shoulder of the road and used it for my final shots. The masonite showed a group around 3" at 100yds for the old Savage which surprised me because I wasn't expecting it to shoot that good.
My bench was an old office desk that was too low and I had to stack 4 sand bags on top of my range box which is a converted fishing tackle box and the rifle butt was left unsupported and not very solid. I still managed some groups around 2 inches from what I could tell on the masonite with my 300Wby Vanguard. Not satisfied I turned the target stand around and stapled the plastic sign to it and the target on top of it.
The first loads were with IMR 4831 which produced .75" groups in this rifle under 165gr Hornaday SP Interlocks before I broke my ankle and load 78.5 and 79.5 grs under a 180 gr Hornaday Sp Interlock.
Wheatherby would publish loads in their catologs so I decided to try some of thier ancient loads.
The first one I tried on the new pastic backer was H4350 79.5grs under a 180gr Hornaday Sp Interlock. This load of 3 shots went into 4.31" x 8.8". Makes me wonder what it will do off a good rest. I had to stop because the toe of the stock was kicking me pretty good and had my shoulder sore and still have a small goose egg from it. Plus I was shooting in a tee shirt and 80 degree temps.

I can believe it was giving you a good kick; QL projects <71K psi with that load. It would be a good punch.

The recoil accually wasn't that bad. I couldn't get the rifle shouldered properly and the toe of the recoil pad is what got me. I don't have a chrony and was wondering what the predicted velocity was on that load Mike. There was absolutely no pressure signs at all. I have one more set of 3 that I didn't shoot which I loaded at 80.5 grs I thought I would save these for my next day at the range when I'll try some RL 22 under some 200gr BT and AB.

The boattail 3072 has slightly lower projected pressure.

Thanks Mike,
I might pull the 80.5 loads though the free bore seems to be keeping the pressure down.

Looks good TD! I know the freebore on the WBY's does act a little weird when trying to QL them, but I know most run much higher loads than QL will ever suggest.

Seems like you have a good rifle right there. Looking forward to more shooting.

I agree Mike , there is no way I would shoot these loads in a custom chambered barrel for 300 Wby with out the Factory free bore.
Thanks Scotty the 200s are next on the list.

Once the soy beans are off the fields I'll be able to stretch it out some. I have a feeling this will make a nice long range load.

Those 200's are going to be a freighttrain in your 300 TD.. Just the perfect bullet for that big case.
