RCBS Precision MIC vs Hornady bullet comparator?

I am thinking of ordering a Hornaday bullet comparator (measures OAL using bullet ogive as reference). However, I just recieved my RCBS Precision MIC. Having read the instructions, it seams that the RCBS MIC would fulfill the same function if using the "bullet seating nut". Am I correct or am I misinterpreting something?

All I want to do is ensure that my rounds are consistent in length relative to the bullet's ogive. I read somwhere that there can be as much as .002" (or what is .020") variation in bullet lengths (same bullet, same company, same package).

Thanks in advance, for any help.

I have the Stoney Point tool (Hornady bought them) and like it. If I were to do it over again, I might buy the steel version from Sinclair International. Alternately, their inserts fit the Hornady tool, and vice versa. I like it because it seems easier to keep a set of calipers with the tool mounted on it laying next to my press while I'm seating, and check every round if I'm really worried about it. The Precision Mic is a neat tool, but it seems like it would be more involved in terms of measuring a large quantity of loaded rounds for COL. Maybe I'm wrong - I've never use a Precision Mic, so I'm just speculating. I've used my comparator extensively. Another nice advantage of the comparator is the availability of headspace bushings for the same body. This allows you to measure the headspace to determine shoulder setback when FL sizing. Of course, the biggest advantage to the comparator is that it is a set, and once you have the insert, any rifle in that cal is covered, unlike the Precision Mic, where you'd buy one each for 308Win, 30-06, 300WinMag, 300Wby, etc.

Thanks Dubyam - Stoney Point/Hornady bullet comparator it is.

As you intimate, using the Precision MIC for doing this task (i.e., checking bullet seating relative to the ogive) would probably be to involved compared to tusing he Stoney Point/Hornday bullet comparator tool. As I have a 2 yr old daughter and a new son on the way (Feb 07 due date) - the time I have for my newfound reloading passion will be extremely limited.

I bought one of the Precision Mics and later the Stoney Point. Gave the RCBS away without a second thought.Rick.
