Hi - Any GunSmiths on here to answer a few questions ? I am going to have built a 338 Federal .
Now my questions are - #1 (cheapest)i am using a Rem M600 308 win - i could have the stock remington barrel rebored too 338 cal and then rechamber to 338 federal ?
#2 (next cheapest) I also have a SS 22 " 308 remington barrel from a rem m700 ti mountain rifle- i could have it rebored then mounted and rechambered ?
#3 - replace barrel with a pac-nor and chamber in 338 federal ? (Most Expensive )
Just looking for opinons on my ideas ! Thanks and Cheers ! RJ

I am no gunsmith, but I would say that labor is going to be a large part of the cost of such a project. I think I would buy a high quality barrel in .338 caliber and have it installed.

The first two options require running a chamber reamer in following the rebore so there is very little cost savings there. The savings is the cost of the barrel because you already have it. The reboring isn't all that cheap either and you can sell either of the 2 .308 barrels to help with cost. The last option is the best and not necessarily that much more costly.

Thanks for the info ! RJ :)

Ohhhhh no. Ohhhhh no. I saw where I can get a 94 in .30-30 rebored to .375 Winchester. Just when I started to feel like I'm on top of things (or about to be), this comes along. I'll never be done, will I?

No. Never...

Find a 338 take off and cut and rechamber for the cheapest deal.

This would be your best bet for a low cost solution but I think a new barrel would be the way to go. Do it right and you will be happy.

i agree with the new barrel scenario i think you would be asking for a ton of trouble reboring and chambering and even if it was reasonably do able im not sure you would find a guy to stand behind it in the accuracy department.

Hi - just wondering why you would think it would be a "ton" of trouble :?: reboring and chambering ? :?: have you or know someome that has had problems with a rebore ? :?: I appreciate of your opinion - just that i have read a bit about it and it seems it can be done very sucessfully but that might just be there opinion also . Thanks for you comments ! Cheers RJ :)

A rebored barrel can be very accurate. It is just that people don't enjoy doing the work as it can be tedious.

Fair enough, given your choices I would go with the rebarrel.
