Here are some pics of 2 recovered bullets. They are .338 - 250 grain Moly Free Partition Gold.

The bullets were recoved from a 2000 pound wild bison shot by a buddy of mine late last fall in northern British Columbia. He was shooting a Sako chambered in 338 Win Mag

The bullet on the left was shot from ~200 yards and took out both lungs on a broadside shot and was found resting up against the hide on the off side. The bullet on the right was recovered from the neck after a mercy shot from 50 feet. (The bull went about 100 yards from where he was shot.)

Cariboo,

Thank you for sharing the photos. It seems that most 338 users go with either the 210 gr or 225 gr PT's.
I shoot a 338RUM and have my moose load developed with the 250 gr PT. It can shoot sub .5" groups on a good day.
How many inches of penetration did your buddy get with those 250 gr PTG's?
I am thinking that with the 338 RUM's higher velocity and larger mushroom would be similar to the 338WM with the PTG and a smaller dia. mushroom.
Thank you for any additional details you can share.

Enjoy the buffalo burgers.

Regards,

JD338

The bull was around 30" thick through the chest and the first shot just failed to exit and was buried in the hide on the off side.

His rifle is loaded to near 2800 fps muzzle velocity with the 250 and delivers repeatable 5 shot groups in the the 1 moa range.

Hopefully in the next few years I will win the Limited Entry Hunting lottery and be the one to pull the trigger on a good bull bison. ;) LoL

BTW: The area this bison was taken has a fast growing population of grizz that have learned to associate rifle shots with gut piles. It takes 3 people to butcher a bison taken there. 2 to skin and quarter and one to keep watch with a loaded rifle!

Well at least in the area you are in, by the looks of the pic, you could see the bear coming from quite a ways off. But I am sure seeing one on the way to dinner would give a person a sick feeling inside.

You'd be surprized how easily a 1000+ lbs bear can sneak up on you, even when the cover doesn't look like it could hide a rabbit. No scarier feeling than walking around with 50-100lbs of bloody meat strapped to your pack.
