Reloader 17

Here's the RL-17 load data I got from Alliant. I've posted it before, but will post it again. Enjoy

Thanks Pop.
I was getting bored and was needing something to do.
I hope I can gain some speed but still mantian the accuracy of my favorite loads.
The 270 load data sounds pretty good.

Oh Great....just what I needed.... anotehr powder to try....
Looks like I have three that may like this stuff... the .260's 7-08 & .280.

POP,
Going to try any with the 120gr B-tip out of the 7-08 ?

Next issue is finding the stuff.....

Probably if I can find some powder. I bet you it would be good in my 416 WBY.

Let me see now!...... 66gr RE 17 from a 24" barreled 300 WSM using a 180 grainer gets 3082 fps!

Based on all of my previous chrony comparisons to 300 WSM 24" tubes using identical loadings and depending on the loads, I averaged 3.9% to 4.5% of less overall velocity from my 300 WSM 16.5" tubed compact!

Although I have received higher velocities with pressure signs, I have gotten a best without pressure signs (1/2 grain below signs of excessive pressure) of 2917 fps with a 180 SST, with good enough accuracy for a hunting load and 2864 with great accuracy. One example was, while I received that best of 2917, a 24"er we tested at the same time, using that same identical loading, chrony`d @ 3048, a 4.3% difference or 17.4 fps per inch difference.

HMMM...Well.. Well.......I wonder what some RL 17 will do in both?

With RL17, a 300 WSM 180 grainer @ 3000 fps MV from a compact barrel??? Maybe :?: ............If so, I guess I`ll just have to take it!!......Hell, I`m happy with the 2900 plus a few.

If any powder on the market can do it, it will be this new hi-tech Rel 17! Gonna be very interesting to find out and to see what the accuracy will be too.

Doesn't higher velocity wear your barrel out faster?
...............Yes! In some over-bored cartridges, barrel life can be reduced. However, using a hi-tech powder like RL 17 for max loadings in the NON over-bored cartridges, imo, will not, or have little to no affect in over all barrel life, even though the velocity is increased.

Based on what I`ve read so far, RL 17 because of its new hi tech kernel technology, increases the velocity while maintaining the SAMMI safe pressure limits while using less powder in the process. New powder technology that increases bullet velocity loaded to within safe SAMMI pressure limits, imo, should not affect the barrel life in the non-overbored cartridges.

When compared to other powders, I`m not sure what velocity increase or affect RL 17 will have on overbored cartridges like the 30-378 or 7 RUM. They usually require slower burners anyway.

RL 17 was designed specifically to increase the performance of the short mags. It appears that in that process, other cartridges will get a boost too.

............Looks like I`ll just have to give RL 17 a go in the 375 Ruger too!

A guy on another forum said he got some and it physically looked alot like one of the V V high energy powders. From what I've read (and i'm sure if you read it on the i net it's GOT TO BE TRUE) some ofthe HE powders from VV are really hard on the throat area of a gun.
It would be great if it's a miracle powder but that data looks not alot different that you see in reloading manuals....it all depends on the test barrel.

From what I do understand, Rel 17 gave highest velocities from the same test barrels than any other powder listed in the Speer manual.

So if the results are in fact higher velocities from same test barrels, then this stuff should really work and increase the velocities in many cartridges.

Whatever velocity specs one is getting now in his individual rifle and depending upon which cartridge, RL 17 with its new powder technology should improve them........The truth will be in the chrony!

Keep your eyes open!.........It`s coming soon! Now in stock at Grafs from what I understand. Not out here on the west coast yet!

I`m waiting on the Beta test results. You guys let me know when you have one, OK?

Weather permitting...I'm going to work up a couple of loads with RL17 tomorrow (308 and 243)

I'll let you know what I find out.

Curious about the results - did you have a chance to test your RL17 loads yet?

Well...I sorta shot my chrono.

I was playing around with a few 45 acp loads first...and I put one right through the brains of it...1 shot kill. Thats the first time I've managed to do that at close range, I have shot 2 while testing loads at distance (1 @ 800 yards, and 1 @ 1,000)...I'll get a new chrono in a couple of weeks and get back to you.

Its still laying down there...I'll post a pic later for "educational" purposes.

Funny you should mention expansion...I've shot those 230 XTP's through everything from glass to wood to car doors and I've never had one come apart...until now...the jacket came off and it didn't penetrate all the way through....That is NOT typical of Hornady XTP's
