I've decided after the first of the year to add another 280 Remington to the collection and have narrowed it down to either a Remington 700 Mountain SS or a Browning X-Bolt Stainless stalker. Is there and advantage to owning one over the other?

The Remington has a 9 1/4 twist and the browning has a 1-10 twist, does one have more of an advantage over the other as far as twist goes? Price wise they're about the same and I'm leaning toward the Browning right now.

Either will serve you well. The twist is not as critical as you might thing. My Remington Anniversary model is a 9.5 twist and my Winchester Featherweight is a 10 twist. Either produces excellent groups and handles pretty much all weight bullets acceptably. I'd probably lean toward the Remington 700 Mountain SS--it is a good looking rifle and shoots well. However, the Browning will give you excellent service as well. Don't think either will be terribly disappointing for you.

I recently picked up an X-Bolt in .270WIN. I'm all kinds of impressed with that rifle. Straight up 3/4MOA group with shots #2, 3, and 4 out of the barrel.

Never been a big Browning fan, but I'm thinking that's changed.

I have both a Remington 700 and a Browning A bolt II, but I'm lefthanded so my choices in the Remington are limited.
But if I were right handed I would go with the Remington.

The guy that I share a hunting lease with has an X-bolt in 270 Win...after several days on the range with him and that rifle...I can see no reason to shy away from Browning...unless you think you may want to customize it in the future.

...buy the Remington, replace the trigger, hopefully w/ one that locks down the bolt, replace the stock, have the action trued when you replace the barrel...

...or...

...buy the X-Bolt, sight it in, go hunting...

I'm gonna take a look at both the next time I'm at one of the gun shops around here and go from there.

Both are great looking rifles but im gonna say Remington but I may be a little bias because I love Remington rifles :). My brother owns several Brownings and has had excellent service with them as well. I thinkl you'll be happy with either and im sure which ever one you choose will serve you well.

I had a 280 in a Remington MTN rifle and loved it! I had it glass bedded and the trigger adjusted and it sure shot 140 gr. Partitions very well. Never should have sold it.

Last year, I saw a Finnlight on Gunbroker in 280, should have !!!!

I had one of the Rem SS Mountains. Liked, but not enough to keep. Was no lighter and my Rem XCR in 280, so kept the XCR for the rainy NW weather.

I already have a McMillan EDGE stock.... well, two, actually... inletted for a LA 700 Mountain contour. I'm a big Remington fan, and I'm pretty indifferent towards Browning rifles, so that's the way I'd go, but certainly there's nothing wrong with the Browning.

The Remington Mountain rifle in a 280 Rem is one of those rifles I should have had years ago. I won't make the mistake of missing out on a 2nd one. Love to find an older one again.

I have owned a couple of the Remington Mountain Rifles in280 Rem over the years, and really like the look of the SS in the nutmeg LSS stock version. The only thing that did not impress me was the pencil thin barrel and the 1 1/2" accuracy was the best I could get.
(I'm a big Remington fan, as the good Dr can attest to, and I know that is more than accurate enough for most of the hunting that I do. But I was spoiled by the old A-Bolt Composite Stalker that I first had in 280 Rem that would shoot 5 shot groups of just under 1" at 200 yards consistently with a few different bullet/powder combinations!)
I have since built a left handed Rem XCR into a 280 Rem with both a XCR and LSS stocks (depending on weather/hunt conditions) that I am liking very well so far, and does not have that pencil thin barrel.
(Still doesn't stop me for wanting the MTN SS LSS version in 280...except it won't be left handed!)

My .280 which my grandson has bought from me, shoots 3/4 inch groups with the 160 AB and Partition both. I also had a Rem Mountain rifle and it would not put the first clean barrel shot into the same groups. It was 2 inches out at 100 yards and as it heated up, the Remington walked vertically after 3- 4 shots. I sold it.

I would get the Remington if its an older one.

I haven't owned a .280 but had a mountain rifle in 30/06. It shot ok groups, never great and it kicked like a mule. I hated the way the bolt didn't lock down and eventually the accurracy became terrible and the stock cracked. I ended up selling it and bought an x bolt. The x bolt shoots better and has a locking bolt. Time will tell as to it's durability.
