I am in the middle of building an M40 type rifle in .308 and wanted more info on this subject. All I know is the Rifles we used in the Corps. didnt have either. Anybody what to help me out? Is one better than the other or should I go with out one? Thanks Goose
Muzzle brakes will reduce recoil to the shooter but add greatly to the noise and muzzle blast. Never shot a ported rifle but in pistols and shotguns I can't feel any recoil reduction. noise level seems to be the same but muzzle jump is lessened to a small degree.Rick.
OB1Marine, The rifle starts out with a Remington action, McMillan Stock and a Winchester Trigger guard/Floorplate. The barrel that was originally used was from Remington, but was changed over to another maker, name of which I can't remember. I can tell you it was 24" long. A friend I grew up with has a son who is pulling duty as a marine sniper in Iraq. I'll get more info for you. I would stay from a muzzle brake. They reduce recoil but at a large price. Noise is increased dramatically. Get a good recoil pad and you won't have a problem.
The M40A3 (2001) is based on a M700 action with a 24" 1-12" RH twist undisclosed barrel. (the M40A1 used a 24" Hart barrel). The Marine fabricated Aluminum Pillar is added to a Mc Millan A-4 Synthetic stock. The buttplate is adjustable and trigger guard/floorplate is 1 peice steel.
The magazine capacity is 5 rounds.
Scope is a Unertl 10X Mil Dot reticle in a 1 pc steel mount (undisclosed).
Total weight is 17 lbs. Shipped witha Otis cleaning kit in a Pelican hard case.
