hey guys,,,been reloading for a few years now and never ran into this before,,,why would a once fired winchester case, resized, trimmed, deburred fit into my ruger, savage, and mossberg 243,,,when a once fired r-p case, resized, trimmed, deburred won't without standing on the bolt,,,both ran through the same process,,,tried 4 or 5,,,all don't work.i reload for different calibers using both plus some others,,,including federal, never had a problem.is there something as a simple die change to make them work because i have alot of them,,,or just stick with win or fed because they work. :?: :?: :?: :?: ,,,quickdeath

Given the same dies are used for all cases and if they are once fired they were indeed fired in YOUR chamber then all should be identical.
Now, if the rem were fired in another chamber(and you're using FLR dies) , and that chamber was cut wrong especially in front of the rim were the dies do not resize, then you will have a problem.
Unless they came like that from the factory...bad lot????????

hi pop,,,the person i got these off of said they were fired from a ruger 243 bolt, almost the same except mine is a vt,,,is there a way to make these cases work or just put them in my brass salvage,,,many others end up there,,,have about 43 pounds,,,waiting for the right price,,,cash them in,,,and buy more reloading stuff    .thanks

Every rifle is an individual so even if they are the same make and model, the chambers can be of different dimensions.
You may be able to run them through a Small Base die and get them to fit.
This die will run you about $20.00, same as a bag of 100 new brass.
I would just go buy new brass and be done with it.

Are you Full Length sizing or Neck Sizing. If you are Neck Sizing then your brass must be matched to the original rifle. If you are Full Length sizing then your dies may need to be adjusted. Even brass fired in a sloppy chamber should come back to specs if your dies are adjusted properly. If you are FL sizing, screw the die in about 1/8 turn and resized the bad brass, keep doing this until it chambers. Or better yet, get a Stoney Point (Hornady) Head and Shoulder Gauge and know for sure what your dies are doing.

I agree with Steve, it sounds like you have a neck die, or your FL die is not adjusted down far enough. Try his advice and you should be fine. There's no reason that brass shouldn't be able to be sized down far enough to fit into your bolt gun with a standard FL size die.

I have some what the same problem. I bought RBCS small base dies for the sizing, trim, check everything and all works fine. Next reload I just full length, trim. I shoot a Browning BLR 81 and everything has to be just right or no chambering.
For my A-Bolt, Full length works fine.
However I have to make sure the reloads for the A-bolt are not used in the BLR or I can't chamber it.

hey guys,,,thanks for all your input, the problem was solved by readjusting my sizer another 1/8 turn clockwise,,,all guns bolt freely and won't have to salvage these,,,,ya know,,,why don't all you guys get together and make up a troubleshooting manual,,,guaranteed it would be on my bench 24-7.many thanks

Good to hear you solved it. We couldn't make a trouble shooting manual because we're constantly coming out here to find the answers ourselves! There's no substitute for experience.

No need for a "trouble shooting" manual. We have all the help we need right here. Glad to hear you fixed your problem.

I ran into a similar problem with my friends 7mm brass.
My die was set to partial full length size. Before I ran my buddys brass through the size die I decided to check it in my gun and .... the bolt wouldn't close. I got out my caliper to take some measurements and found that the shoulder was .013 farther forward than my rifle  .

It sounds like what you did was bump back the shoulder.
Happy to hear you got the issue resolved.

This forum is truely a wealth of information. I've been loading for 33 years now and I am still learning form you guys.

You guys saved me tonight. I searched through lots of old post just to find the OAL of a 7mm Untra Mag cartidge. Thank you, to all of you. My loading manual did not have the 7 Ultra, just the 300 Ultra.

R 300 Ultra Mag,

Keep in mind that you may be able to load to just under the max magazine length. I do this with several clibers including mu 338 RUM and get very good accuracy.
