had saw a wide horned buck on 2 different occasions at my favorite long range hunting spot, this morning at 7:00 I finaly found him, saw lots of width and a weak left side, so since I had my precision long range rifle, and he was only 300 yards I decided to give him a chance and shot offhand. would have been a pretty buck except for the fact he had been hit by a car and 5 of 8 points were broken, 2 were totaly gone making him a 7 pointer, and he was still 17 1/2" inside

Still a handsome deer, even if not symmetrical. Congratulations on a great shot!

Congratulations on a nice buck and a great shot.

Glad you got the road hazard out of the way. I like my venison on the grill, not in the grill.

thanks all.
today I took 1/2 day off my own hunting and took my 13 yo nephew out, he's been struggleing trying to learn, so since he's been doing well helping his grandma I took him in search of his first buck, at first light his deer was located and we were starting to get in position for a shot, he asked how far? I said he's 300 yards, thats along way for my 243, could I shoot your gun, I handed him my 7mm AM, helped him get set up and he hammered him. just a lil 3 pt. but in his eyes the hanson buck pales in comparison.

That is some fine shooting! 300 yards offhand is impressive.

Nice work getting the young fella involved also.

RR,

That is an awesome account. Congratulations to your nephew for taking the shot and to you for instructing him.

funny part was, he asked if my rifle kicked as we planned the hunt, because I was gonna let him use my rifle for any long range shot up to 600 yards. I told him it kicked less than his rem. 770 243.
so when the time came he shot for the first time with a braked rifle chambered in the baddest 7mm made, at the report, the buck took a dirt nap, I said, good job, thats how its done, and he just layed there, didn't move, didn't talk, didn't react, the bark of the big rifle almost put him in shock. I asked if he was ok, he finaly came around, said OMG thats loud, did I get him?.

RR, what makes you think that buck was hit by a car? There's lots of way to loose those points, fighting, rubbing, stuff like that. Just wondering.

front leg was injured, one ham was bruised, the black place under the curve of the right mainbeam looked like someone used a grinder on it, where it slid on the asphalt I assume. and he was shot 200 yards from a 4-lane highway. could be wrong but don't think so.

ok, my buck seasons over, found a young 8 point laying in his bed at 430 yards this morn, he never got up. got 3 doe tags, will wait till the rut is over and they calm a bit and give the big 7 a workout.
