"Did that have anything to do with being on a two way range?"

I could see where experience on the two-way range would affect attitude towards the range games... Yes indeed.

Actually, two way ranges are way more fun than any range I was ever on at Wilcox! The damned range Nazi's were just a pain in the butt. The last time I went as a SSgt, I had a young LCpl that kept insisting that I was shooting all wrong as I shot the offhand facing the target, the same way you would shoot in an actual engagement. He swore up and down that it wasn't going to work.. Either way, I shot a 58 out of a 65 on that range. Expert with the new scoring system was a 40 at the time...

Up at Zero Dark Thirty. Draw weapons from the armory. March from Camp Margarita to the Wilcox Range in the dark. Draw ammo at the 200 yard line. Sit and wait for the sun to rise and then wait for the fog to lift.

Then we could start shooting!

Almost lost my expert badge once at that Wilcox Range. Shot exactly the score required for expert and not one point more! Worst I ever did. After that I got my act together and generally shot in the 240's.

I remember being surprised that so many Marines could sling up and go prone at 500 and put most, if not all, of their shots in the bull at 500 yards. Iron sights, issue rifles and standard fmj military ammo. The Corps was doing something good with all that rifle training. I hope it never goes away.

Scotty - is the standard course still something like this? A little fuzzy as I haven't shot the USMC qual course in a long time now:

200 standing, kneeling, sitting slow fire (5rds per position)
200 sitting rapid fire (10 rounds)

300 sitting slow fire (5 rounds)
300 prone rapid fire (10 rounds)

500 prone slow fire (10 rounds)

That's what I seem to recall - and all that did a lot for my confidence afield with my scoped hunting rifles too.

Guy, the MC has since changed the range again, I am not sure what the new qual course looks like, as I haven't shot it since 2004.. It is supposed to be more combat oriented and such now. The Marine Corps does have it all over the other services though. They really focus on rifle marksmanship throughout your entire career, for the most part.

Practice has been paying off improved my offhand score and shot a 5x 5 10 in the rapid at 200

Do you still use the figure 8 pattern for off-hand shooting?

No I reversed my hand so the thumb is facing me on the right. side and elbow down along the side of my body on the right side all weird but helpful and mire accurate. looking forward to next weekend will shoot three matches that weekend. getting a lot more confident. will be shooting over in Douglas Wyoming this weekend on a precision/tactical course this weekend lots of good shooters showing up looking forward to.that also.
