I have been looking around for a new rifle and came across a Ruger #1 A in 7x57
This is the older pre warning model with the red butt pad.
The gun is used but shows very little wear.
I have read nodak7mm tread about the twist rate and i would like to shoot 140 bullets
The owner wants 595.00 but might get him down to 550.00
DO you all think it would stablise the 140 bt
Not the best photos but will do for now

I'll stabilize a 140 with no problems. Generally you just run into problems with shooting a long (heavy) bullet with a slow twist.

You should be in great shape for the 140's. Sounds like a very nice rifle and a good price as well. Scotty

How much figure is in the wood? Ruger was still putting out some nice stocks on the #1s back then. Even if it has a couple hundred round down the barrel, it will shoot well for a long time. I do like that caliber for deer and black bear hunting. Give me a good old round nose 160 grain Partition!!!

Or that 175gr Hornady RN! Talk about a cool old game killer. Do folks still hunt with RN's besides you Joel? Just wondering? HA!! Scotty

 That's funny...those old round noses chugged through the brush pretty well for several deer!!! The black bear I shot was using 175 grain round noses in the 7X57. It ran about 50 yards and piled up after a double lung shot. Of course the shot should have been made with a bow, it was less than 25 yards.

Ram161,

Dont let my anal babbling detour your decision, I always want my cake with ice cream.. As in several posts, I just want to shoot smaller weight bullet wt than what the given 7x57 twist is optimized for. I am not saying by no means, it wouldnt shoot 120/140's. I am sure it would shoot em just fine. But as I said, I am anal & if I am gonna spend that kinda cash, I am going to get something that does exactly what I want it to do...

Now I am really excited to see the 2011 offerings from Ruger...

Elkman, I'm not sure if they did, but I thought they (Nosler) made their 175 spitzer in a semi spitzer config, but looking on line, it looks pretty pointy to me...

OK you guys have twiked my interest, 6mm and 257 when did Nosler make a RN Partition? I truly have never seen one!

Elkman you cannot quote me on this, but when Nosler was turning their bullet on the lathe many moons ago, they did make a semi-spitzer and I don't for the life of me remember what caliber it was in. Can someone help me out on that one :?:  For some reason I think it was a 6mm 95 gr. spitzer and the 100 gr. originally was a semi-spitzer, possibly to stabalize in the slow twist that the idiots at Remington chose to first make in the 6mm, that being a 1-12" twist.

I know they have a Semi Spitzer in the 160gr .277 PT and the 220gr .308. I see the only true RN is the 170gr 30-30 bullet. I want a 30-30 just to be able to use those. Probably a fun little woods rifle! Scotty

There were quite a few semi-spitzer Nosler Partitions.

The old 85 grain 6mm was called a semi-spitzer and was pretty rounded. Seems to me they used to have a 117 gr round-nose or semi-spitzer in .257 too - it was even offered in Weatherby factory loads as I recall.

I've got some .375 Nosler Partitions that are round nose bullets too - or perhaps semi-spitzer. They're old, not currently offered.

I will bet it will and you are getting a great price. The forend tension screw is the key to those early #1's.

Congrats. You need to post some pictures after you get it.

I plan on picking it up on thursday so will try to get photo,s up this weekend
I will be taking my grandson out elk hunting this weekend so don't know what free time i will get
I had a 1A in 243 years ago and it shot good. Should have keep it but traded for a winchester 70 338.
My plans for this one is to load 140 noslers and use it for Deer hunting.
