Has anyone seen one for sale yet? I heard Ruger announced they are going to take on this chambering at the SHOT show. There is a lot of ammo available for it even at Wal-Mart in my area. Savage's BMAG version has been reported to have a lot of function and accuracy issues so I have held off getting one. In Michigan, you can only use a rimfire for night time predator hunting. I have a Marlin 25MN in 22 Mag but am thinking the 17 WSM might give me about all the range I could use here in the north woods. It might be time to start buying a few boxes before the Rugers start showing up. Thoughts/Opinions?

I used to use a lot of 22 mag for predators back in michigan also. I switched to the 17 HMR when I moved to alaska, used to excellent effect on fox, I’m betting the 17 WSM would be even more of a good thing in terms of predators and an excellent option for michigan night hunting.

Just a thought, keep in mind that sometimes accuracy issues with a .17 cal are thought to be attributed to the fact that the very small bore size is more affected by fouling, more quickly, than a bigger bore. That could be an issue no matter who makes the Rifle. That said, I don't care for the B mag looks or feel myself. CL

Little .17 HMR is a sweetheart and very accurate.

Have never even seen the .17 WSM cartridge or rifle...

BTW - cleaning the little .17 HMR? Hah! Almost never.

I spent some cash when I got young John his .17 HMR CZ, popped a Leupold atop it, bought a case of ammo, got a real nice one-piece cleaning rod for it, some .17 cal jags & such...

It really doesn't seem to need to be cleaned more often than every couple of hundred rounds. Now that's with a 17 gr bullet at 2600 fps, not the .17 WSM power level, but interesting. I bought all that fancy cleaning gear for it and it's almost never used. Huh.

I really wish CZ would chamber the 17 WSM. That would be the perfect night time pairing to my 204 day time partner!

Randy,

I am intrigued with the Winchester 17 WSM. I think it would work really well here for night time predator hunting. I do believe it would have the horsepower to dump a coyote right quick. I too have seen ammo but no rifles.....yet.

Just an update: Ruger is now producing the rifle with a walnut stock and stainless steel heavy 26" barrel. I have seen some for sale on Gunbroker lately. Interestingly, Ruger is making their barrel with a 1:9 twist, whereas, Savage has gotten away from the 1:9 and gone with 1:8 in their target thumbhole model with heavy barrel because of complaints with their earlier rifles not shooting the 25 grainers well. That is the grain bullet I want to use, but will wait for some accuracy reports with the Ruger before deciding which way to go.
