I am still planning on trading my 7mmwsm for that 300 rum, but I also called one of our sports stores up here and they had a Ruger M77 338 win mag with a stainless steel 26 inch barrel and a laminate stock for $377. What is everyone's opinion on the Rugeer m77? Are they a good rifle with good accuracy, plus how do you like the 338 win mag for a long range round? Thanks

That's a sweet price on the 338 and with the 26" barrel you could get some real good velocity with handloads. The 338 is a great long range round depending on the bullet and velocity and a 200 gr. A/B or B/T at 2900 fps+ would do the job. I havn't owned a Ruger 77 but from everything I hear they are excellent and have better triggers now. Ruger makes great guns from my experience with other models. I love the looks of their laminated stock, stainless steel rifles. Now you have a decision to make
Good Hunting
Elkhunt

There is nothing wrong with the M77. Like all guns you can get good ones and bad ones as far as accuracy goes. They are pretty easy to glass bed and float.Sometimes this really helps their accuracy.

I don't know that much about the M77, but you'll love the 338 WM with a 26" tube! With the 200 gr. Ab you should be able to reach 3000 FPS with the longer tube. I shoot 225 ABs out of My 338 for everything, works great.

The Ruger M77 is a fine rifle and the 338 WM is a great cartridge. You can't go wrong with this combo, and that sounds like a great price for the rifle.

I use my .338 Win Modle 70 Classic as my back up long range rifle.
With the long tube, and H4350, you can get 3100 out of the 200gr BSST's. With H4831, I also shoot the 200gr around 3050. Both shoot around .75"

I like my Rugers, some are floated some are not, all shoot good. If you get the Ruger I have set ine up like this: "The factories tighten to a certain spec for torque. I don't have that capability so I do this. I let the action sit loose in the stock with zero torque applied by any screws. I then tighten the forward recoil lug screw as tight as I possibly can by hand. I want the screw to snug that recoil lug back and tight as it can. I then go all the way to the very back tang screw and tighten it firm. Not white knuckle, but good and firm. Then the middle screw is tightened just enough to keep it from falling out of the gun. That places less stress/torque on the action and helps the bedding do its job. "

This has helped all mine to shoot much better.

The extra barrel really makes a differnece on the .338 win mag.
Nosler #6 also list the 250's flying at 2800. That actually makes it reasonable comparable to the .375 H&H/.375 Ruger.
Old Elmer knew what he was doing.

I have a tang safety Ruger M77 in 338win mag and it is a good shooter. My load is a mag primer with 75grs of IMR4350 and a 200gr BT or 210gr PAR bullets for just under 3100FPS in my rifle @20' over my chronograph. I believe my rifle has a 22-24" factory barrel.

Proper sequence for tightening the action bolts is Diagonal screw/bolt at 50-90inch pounds Then the aft trigger screw/bolt at 30-50 inch pounds. Then the forward trigger screw/bolt at 30-50 inch pounds. I admit I tighen mine more but that is factory reccomended.

My experience with the 77 is so-so as far as accuracy goes.
If that 26" tube is important to you I would verify length. Never ever seen a 77 with a 26" tube (sans the vt trget model)

I would go for the 300 rum.

I am still going for the 300 rum  for the trade, but I am looking to buy the 338 win mag

Get Both!

Seriously with a 200 gr AccuBond at 3150 fps you will not miss a 338 Win mag
I am now considering getting the 338 win mag for my dad as a late fathers day present, because he only owns a 45 auto.

When you get it let me know...I got loads! 8) :p

Back to what Pop said, 77's in 338 WM did not come in 26".. Look closely, could be a tomater stake or maybe not....

Well I saw the rifle today and it does have a 26 inch barrel but some blood got onto it because it was used and the blood ate on the barrel a little bit but not bad. The rifle also looks like a safari rifle.
