I have an older savage 93r17. It does not have the accu trigger and is the light barrel. It shoots okay but I would like better. What ammo would you try if you were just starting out and what would you expect for 100 yard groups with a 3-9 scope? I am really thinking about selling it because I can't reload for it. Right now it shoots 1,5" groups at 100.

I would buy 1 box of every load made and see what your rifle likes the best.

150 bucks or so..

Like Jim said, try out some different ammo and clean it really well. My son's Savage will shoot dime sized groups with the Winchester Supreme ammo..

Not to high jack your thread Wisc..... but if some body needs a Savage synthetic stock for that rifle. PM me I have one id like to sell. CL

The reason for selling would be because of need not function or groups.

Dad and I both have a Savage in 17 HMR, bull barrel, etc. I purchased ten (10) different types of ammo, one box each and took the rifles to the range. Groups at 100 yards ranged from bughole to 4 inches, and each rifle liked a different ammo.

I hate to say it but you have to decide if you want to either a) do the same or b) try it with a different rifle. No guarantee the next one won't have its favorites either. If nothing else it's fun to shoot and get better at form.

FYI, did the same thing with our 22's and had similar results.

Dr. Vette and JD338 nailed the solution to the dilemma. Each rifle is an individual to itself. Whenever I would sell a rimfire rifle, I would recommend purchasing a box the appropriate ammunition from multiple manufacturers. Few people ever took my recommendations, and few were ever totally satisfied with the performance of their rifle. Those who heeded the advice almost always found an ammunition that performed exceptionally in their rifle.

You might want to do some googling as well before picking out your ammo to test. I believe all the 17 HMR ammo is produced at the same CCI plant and aside from tip color, is identical in most cases.

I have the heavy barrel 93 with the accutrigger and it's a nice shooter. After having shot the savage and a CZ.. I'd rather have gotten the CZ.

That is the rumor, and to a degree it may be true.
However, the powders are different and I can assure you that each load shoots differently no matter what plant they came from or bullet they shoot. Unfortunately there is no substitute from trying out each one.

I need to get smart and sell sample packs of ammo. 10 rounds of 5 different ammo kinds.

I wish you could buy centerfire ammo at 5 rounds per sample box. I hate it when you shoot 3-5 in a box of 20, find out they don't work for your rifle, and have 15-17 left.

At least 17HMR is cheap, and even "bad" accuracy rounds can hit a clay pigeon on the ground. :)

John Barsness has said that all the poly tipped ammo is exactly the same and produced in the same factory. The difference, he says, has to do with lot-to-lot variance. I believe him, because some batches of Hornady's group better in my rifle than others.

I had an older hmr before the accutrigger that liked the 20 grain xtp better than any of the 17 grain offerings I fed it. That, and the crappy trigger, are why I sold it and bought another one with the accutrigger.

Honestly, I think your rifle is probably worth mor ethan $150.00. Gander was asking $285 for the same 22Mag a couple years ago. That said the Mossberg version of the 17HMR is going for $125.00 There are a couple tricks for that lousy trigger. Mine is now a crisp 3.5.

No offense, but I don't believe him.

When researching it I found a post on a different board where someone disassembled several brands of 17HMR ammo and posted photos. The powders were different as were the amounts of powder. The actual bullet may be similar, and the brass, but what they do with them is different. I'm sure that each ammo company has their brand produced to their specs. I've seen far more variance brand-to-brand than lot-to-lot.

I have a .22 WRM, Model 93, wood stocked with Accutrigger. I paid about $260 new for it three years ago. Mine shoots sub MOA groups with the Winchester Black Box 30 grain ammo at 2200 fps. I have killed mucho varmits and small critters with it because it is so accurate.

BTW, John Barsness is know for being a straight up and honest person why are you picking on him? What is your real agenda here Jason?

Got the same one with the thumbhole laminate stock. Love it! Very accurate.
