Savage 340b queston

Hey all, new member here. I have an old Savage 340B In 30-30. I've been curious about the 125 Nosler ballistic tips. Currently I am loading 130 gr Sierra Pro Hunters with 38 gr of leverevoution and 34.5 gr of imr 3031. I have been getting good accuracy with what ever I feed it with the exception of the 150 gr hornady rn interlock bullets. Those can't seem hold onto any shred of decent amount of accuracy.

I have used 150 gr Hornady sp's with good results but ended up causing feeding problem with my box magazine. The projectiles have to be seated pretty far back just to get the round to fit inside the box magazine. I switched to the 130s and it feels great. Now I'm so far beyond curious, lol.

Those 125 BT and 125 AB are both great bullets. I would stick with the BT since the modest velocities of the 30/30 don’t require a bonded bullet. LVR powder has given me some impressive velocity in the 30/30. Should do well in your 340.

The 125 BT running 2150fps out of a 14” Contender proved pretty effective on whitetails. I always used 150gr Sierra FN out of a 30-30/20ga Savage 24

I remember that rifle from days gone by..... Never understood why the 30/30 wasn't offered in a bolt action by more manufacturers.

I'd say give the 125 BT a try. It's been given some pretty good reviews here, at velocities far faster than a 30/30. You have nothing to loose.

I actually used it as my bullet of choice when I was loading up my 308 (back-up rifle)for an antelope hunt.

I've been tempted several times to buy one of these in the past and still kicking my self for not buying a Rem M788 I saw chambered for 30-30 at a gun show.
I have had one in .22 Hornet and let my Nephew talk me out of it but at least it's still in the family.

Actually this post has raised some curiosity in this old guy and I have like a 100 1st fire 30-30 brass and I believe I have a couple of pounds of IMR 3031.
I think it time to get my 30-30 in the 340 up and running as my grandson is now 9 and has been asking to go shoot .

This rifle has been amazing. It loves the 150 gr spire points but I just ran into a over all length issue between the cartridge length and magazine size restrictions. I was going to step down to the 140 monoflex bullets but they were longer that the 150's I had been using. May still try them some time in the future. But I settled on the 130's mentioned. They are quite accurate enough for deer season. Recoil is surprising, not painful, for a 30-30.

With my 150 grain loads, 36.5 gr of leverevoution. I was actually surpassing an A.R 10 in 308 with a 16" barrel. My velocity was higher from my 21 1/4" barrel.

I see them around in the 788. Actually more often than the other calibers, for sale at a decent price that is. I suppose that's because the 30-30 will always be associated with the classic lever, but the 788's are known shooters and I would venture that one of them in a 30-30 would be no different.

The REM 788's are often considered to be the better of the bunch. Mainly for the fact they were easier to mount optics on it, and had the larger magazine length, allowing longer cartridge oal for the heavier projectile. The stevens/Savage/Springfield/Western field/coast to coast have free bore.

• 3.1.1 High Power Hunting Silhouette Rifle - A hunting style rifle having a maximum weight of 9 pounds, including sights and if applicable, an empty magazine or clip. The intent of this rule is to describe a common hunting rifle.
(a) Caliber: 6mm or larger, provided that no belted cartridges or Magnums are allowed.
(b) Sights: any telescopic or metallic sight may be used. Scopes may not be more than 1.5 inches above the rifle, as measured from the top of the receiver to the underside of the scope tube, nor may the scope be offset from the centerline of the bore. Exception: for rifles that eject the empty cartridge case straight up and that normally use an offset scope, the scope may be offset. Any sighting device programmed to activate the firing mechanism is prohibited.
(c) Stock: A hunting style stock; thumbhole-type stocks are not permitted. Attachments, either removable or permanent, are not permitted. Swivels and slings are permitted, but slings may not be used for arm support in shooting. Dimensions may not exceed those described in 3.1(d).
(d) Trigger: Trigger pull shall not be less than 2 pounds. In the event of an accidental discharge, range officers shall require adjustment of the trigger or replacement of the rifle. Rifles must be equipped with a functional safety.
All safety features, including any manual safety, must be functional.
(e) Barrel: A hunting style contoured barrel that tapers from chamber to muzzle. Bull barrels are not permitted. A factory tuner that does not act as a muzzle brake or compensator is permitted. Maximum barrel length is 26 inches, including tuner. (See Rule 3.16.1).
(f) Magazines: Magazines may not be loaded with more than 5 rounds.
Exception: During a Shoot Off, single cartridge loading may be used at direction of the Range Officer.
