This afternoon I took a little drive & hike up where I've taken most of my mule deer over the past few years, in Washington's Cascades. Things look good, and I suspect I'll be there opening morning. I also suspect this will look more like what people have in mind, when they think of Washington State:

Just cell phone photos, but I think they give you the idea. This is steep country, much higher and wetter than the high desert country I scouted yesterday. Different population of mule deer as well, and a much greater chance of running into a cougar, bear or elk while deer hunting. I like it up here.

Either the wet side or the dry side are exciting for hunting, Guy. I love both.

I love your pics. You guys show me all the things I'm missing here on the east coast and I'm green with envy.

Saturday morning!

24 hours from now I'll be hunting, not scouting!

There was an earlier 10 - day season in September, in the high country, but I only managed to get out for one day during that season, known as the "high buck" season. It's typically a backpacking or horsepacking deal, and I just didn't have the time avail in September for that. So... It's the general season for me, nine days is all. Weather is looking pretty good for hunting. Expecting cool, wet conditions, maybe more snow up high. That should help.

We have a three-point minimum here, and on the first few days I plan on passing anything that's not a decent, mature buck. We'll see how well that resolve holds up when a legal, fat, young buck shows up in easy rifle range... I tend to shoot the first legal buck I can. Only time to time do I exercise the willpower to pass on a legal buck on public land.
