I am using 75 gr vmax bullets. The measure .875 total length. I have them .02" off the lands but there is only .17" inside the neck. Do I need to seat deeper to get better contact? I could go .1 deeper which will put me at .03" off the lands and .27 inside the neck. What would you do?

Seat thm deep enough into the case so they will function well and not worry about distance to the lands. You can be farther than that off the lands and still shoot well.Rick.

They work in the rifle, I just want to make sure the are deep enough so there is enough neck tension.

G'Day Fella's,

Wisconsin Teacher, the best advice I could give you, is to use slightly heavier 87 or 90grn Flat Base bullets!
Even when seated, 0.020" off the rifling, they will be seated deeper into the case neck.

I have a couple of .25-06 rifles (Rem 700 & Kimber L84 Mt), and I wouldn't go any lighter than 87grn bullets, in these rifles!

Hope that helps

I use the 87 grain .257 bullets bu always seat them close to one bullet diameter into the neck, just to insure runout and case to bullet axis alignment.

+1

This is the axiom I've always been told or have read, "Seat the bullet one caliber in depth as a minimum to ensure adequate and uniform neck tension."

Some of my best shooting loads have a bunch of jump to the lands.

...seating them @ COAL (3.025") will put the bottom of the bullet @ the bottom of the case neck, I would seat them a minimum of 1 bullet dia., but I've shot boxes of 'em @ pdawgs seated @ COAL w/ no problems/ very good accuracy so I'd seat 'em the 0.3"...

Rule of thumb for seating depth is to seat min of caliber into the case.

WT - have you shot any of them yet? For single loading, the short distance they're in the neck wouldn't be a big problem. The 75 gr bullet is a varmint bullet, so single loading shouldn't be much of a problem anyway. No need to even put them in the magazine, just shove a cartridge into the chamber and close the bolt.

Well, on many actions anyway. If they shoot well, why not use them as is?

Knew there was a reason I just use the 115's in my .25-06 rifle!

Actually, never have done much varminting with it - just the stray rock chuck or coyote now and then. The 115's serve fine for that purpose as well.

I have some 85 gr Nosler BTs which I am using in my .257 Roberts and I get 3595 fps with them in my rifle. This is pretty fast and flat trajectory for a .257 Roberts and these bullets would kill a coyote as far as I can hit them. The .25-06 would build on that for velocity.

Charlie - your velocity numbers from that long-bored FN action are solid 25-06 numbers. I can just get to 3275fps out of my 257R M70 Fwt with the 85gr NBT.

The 75gr VMax is going to be extremely explosive at 25-06 velocities. The 85/87/100gr options will be a better LR bullet than a 75gr bullet if you're thinking of reaching out beyond 300 yds.

My .257 Roberts is long FN Mauser action, with 30-06 magazine length and is freebored. I am seating the bullets to 2.920 instead of 2.780 COAL.

Roger that, I just didn't want WT to expect velocity figures way beyond what you're seeing in his 25-06. Your 257Bob is an anomoly with that configuration.
