Sell me on a 35 Whelen!

So I have batted this around for quite some time, thinking I have a Encore frame, why not get a whelen barrel. Sell me one!

No sales job needed. Just use one once on game and you'll be sold. Large frontal area, greater mass than the parent cartridge (30-06) at good velocities and it won't kick you out from under your hat--what's not to like.

I'll second what Dr. Mike said. The Whelen has rapidly become my favorite cartridge. Never thought anything would ever push my pet 30-06 into second place but the Whelen did.

Mild mannered recoil, great accuracy, big hole chopped all the way through any critter with almost 'zero' bruised meat...sheboygin! ha. Its a sweetheart that you can use mild Remington 200 gr corlokts on or zip it up to brown bear killers with 250-310 heavies! It will amaze you my friend! Good luck to you Pard!

I've used the 35 Whelen since 1988 so we have some history.
Properly loaded, it will be right on the heels of the 338 Win Mag.
Plenty of power to hunt anything in NA and flat enough to kill elk sized game to 400 yds.
Devastating on deer, nice size exit wounds and very short heavy blood trails.

Every Deer I have taken with the 35 Whelen has been DRT, no blood trail to follow. A Doe I shot one year at 60-yards with the 225 AB hit the ground so fast I thought at first I missed her! :mrgreen:

My daughter killed her first buck this past deer season at 80-yards shooting the 225 PT, I was able to see clearly the kill results, flipped the buck upside down and slammed him to the ground with out even a twitch, rib cage shot through the lungs.

You will get hooked on this caliber, also it's easy to reload too.

It's hard to do much better than a 35 Whelen. Plenty of great bullets and just an easy going cartridge. I've enjoyed mine a lot. I've got a couple rifles but none of them do measurably better than the old 35 Whelen.

Pretty much the same here Don, 17 WT deer and a 250 lb black bear. As I recall, only 2-3 ran
but they only went 30-40 yds and left a very heavy blood trail.

The 35 Whelen is a hammer on game.

There nothing I can say that has not been said :wink: Doc gave such a raving review on the 35 Whelen that I just had to have one so I had RMR build one :mrgreen:. I have never once been disappointed!!
Only recommend that you go minimum 1-14 twist or better yet 1-12 on barrel .

Nah, the Whelen is over rated, can't penetrate through a wet paper sack, and is so inaccurate you can't hit a barn when shooting from inside the barn.

How's that for reverse psychology?

Kind of an interesting round. You can push a 225 grain bullet almost as fast as a 30-06 can push a 180 grain bullet. All with the same case.

And, well… there is the cool factor. :mrgreen:

Sighted in at 200 yards, a 250 grain Nosler PT drops only about 1-11/2 inches more at 300 yards than my 180 grain Nosler AB out of a 30-06. It hits game like the hammer of Thor but isn't brutal to shoot. Not that other calibers wouldn't do the job on really big and tough game, the 35 gives you a nice selection of heavy bullets for some really deep penetration. As already stated, it doesn't destroy a lot of meat on deer sized game either.

Lastly, if you had a 35 Whelen....you'd be really cool just like the rest of us that own them

Does any one now what the TC Encore barrels have for a twist. I looked some but have not found out yet, It sounds like a big thumper with not a lot of smack on the shooter side of things, sound fun, I guess I better keep dreaming and thinking of ways to get one. Thanks all for the replys

I just picked up a 35 Whelen and have 10 rounds through it. So far I like it and think the 250 Hot Cor is going to be great on deer here in WI. Not that it is needed but it sure is fun to have something different than an 06 or 270 like every other guy in the state.

BUT-- we looked at the 35 Whelen, twice. the first time my husband opted for the 340 Weathery. the second time I opted for the 348, however in my case I really enjoy the lever and my shots are under 250 yards, so the extra yards the whelen would give me did not mean as much to me as it might to you.

Should I turn in my forum card now or wait for official notice from Jim that it has been revoked .
