Ok, so I was reloading some more 300gr Accubonds tonight for the .338 lapua and ran into something interesting with coal that I can't figure out? I set the seating die up for an overall length of 3.692" and out of 20 rounds loaded 16 of them were all within one thousandth of that measurement, but the other 4 all measured exactly 3.6785". I for the life of me can't figure out why they would be that far off, and measure the exact same length? Using redding dies, and I measured each round as it was loaded, 2 of the short ones were back to back, the other 2 were random throughout the batch. Any ideas? Cause I'm stumped....

Are you seeing any differences in the bullet length?

Nope, already checked that....they're all seating below the level of the lip of the primer pocket. If they would have all been short but random lengths I would chalk it up to user error, but to have them all measure out to the exact same length makes me wonder if the box of bullets has two different production lots in it that have slightly different ogive placement? It's my best theory anyway....

JD, there is some variance in bullet length (although its small amount) but I find that with pretty much any bullet out there, and have never run into this situation before with any of my reloads.

That is were I was going with it, maybe the ogive is different.
Call Mike Harris at Nosler and explain it to him. Let us know what you find out.

I will likely give him a call and see if I'm crazy or if something weird is going on. Thanks JD.

I went ahead and measured every unloaded bullet I have left using my Hornady bullet comparator and then measured my remaining SMK's and Hornady HPBT match to see if the base to ogive measurement of the bullets was consistent in their deviation. Here are the results:

Seems like a few of the 300 AB's are way out there from the ogive to base measurement. The Sierra and Hornady's look pretty good really. Hope you are able to get this sorted out. It hasn't been a good month for me and AB's, so I am pulling for you!

I don't know how your measuring, but one thing you may want to do is eliminate the base in the measurement by using a second tool on the heel of the bullet.

A group I measured some time ago. I forget exactly what they were. (CRS!)

I come across the same problem with different bullets in .257 & haven't been able to work out what the problem is. For me, it's an on going issue. I just check every round carefully after seating the bullet & re-seat. Often this means a small adjustment to the seating die. (RCBS Comp.) Then adjust back for the next round.
It's a pain, but has to be done. :?
