Couple pics from a recent scouting trip, first time trying to post pics on a forum

It does look as if sheep might hide in that country. It is lovely, isn't it. You did very well on posting some excellent, nostalgia inducing photos. Are you intending on hunting there this fall?

Those are some beautiful pictures.
Where abouts are you scouting for sheep?

Pictures were taken last weekend in the Pecos wilderness area north central new mexico. The forest only recently opened after being closed all summer due to fires in adjoining areas. Saw over a hundred elk, mostly cows and calves, interestingly they were mostly hiking uphill in the evenings to graze on the tundra above treeline, I hunt them at lower elevations and expect them to come down at night, very fun to watch them. I really enjoyed being in the high country for a few days, I've mostly been a desert rat the last few years and It's easy to forget that there are places like this in new mexico. Saw a few sheep, luckily I only have one more week of not sleeping very much before I head back up to put the try on 'em.

Best of luck to you. Just being in such country is a reward in its own right. Nevertheless, we're all pulling for you to tag out.

Very awesome pictures buddy! That place looks incredible. I would have thought you would have said CO or somewhere in Canada! I never knew NM held such places. Thank you very much for sharing those pictures. Good luck and hope you are able to get on your sheep. Scotty

Wow thanks for sharing the pictures. For one that's never been to New Mexico I would not have everknow that kind of country existed there, always thought it was just desert. But thats my own ignorance. Great photos and good luck.

There is nothing more beautiful than God's postcards. Thank you for sharing those photographs, it even makes a flat lander like me want to be there

Blessings,

Too Tall- I did see some sheep. Most of them seem to have moved down to the timber as I am told they are want to do in this area at this time of year. The pecos area is considered the tougher of the sheep hunts in new mexico for that reason. The sheep I saw did not seem to be particularly wary, just difficult to spot and then you have to challenge the terrain a little bit to aproach them. I did however get some pretty good sheep pics which I will post up after the hunt. Glad you guys enjoyed the pictures, hope all of you get a chance to do this kind of thing someday, I feel very blessed!

Tobey284,

Thanks for posting the pictures and sharing the details.
Best of luck on your sheep hunt. we look forward to hearing about the hunt and seeing some pictures.

What rifle and load are you going to use? What kind of optics?

Good looking country! Here's a few sheep shots (hah! I like that, sheep shots...) to keep you motivated. Of course anyone lucky enough to draw a sheep tag should be pretty doggone motivated anyway.

Dare I say "Little Bighorn" ? Photo taken by me, while hiking a few miles north of my place:

And my favorite, a pair of rams I came across along the Idaho/Montana border. I think we were all surprised!
