Woo-hoo boys. Permits are out for moose, sheep, and goat here in Montana finally! After 37 years in a row now for moose and sheep, I finally.............................................. didn't get drawn again!

Maybe next year. Man I just envisioned myself hunting a large ram with that brand new Winchester Model 70 in .280 Ackley Improved! I have to laugh or I'll cry! Maybe next year?? (y)

Darn David. Too bad brother. Hopefully you score next year. You do get elk and deer permits though? The 280 doesn't have to wait another fall does it?

Nope she'll be used Scotty. I'll be out chasing elk, deer, and fall bear with it! And later there are always coyotes and I'll get a wolf permit too so who knows. Bison has not been drawn yet so there's still that chance. (y) I have not done so yet, but I also purchase one chance every year for one of the moose, sheep, goat, antelope, elk, deer, bison, and mountain lion Supertags they have. It's only $5.00 each and you can purchase as many chances as you wish, but I just buy one of each usually. If drawn you can hunt anywhere in the state for a district that has a season on that animal! Now that would be sweet!

Fortunately, there is always next year, David. We don't bat a thousand, but as long as we get to hunt, it is okay.

Wow 37 years that has to be a record, you deserve one . What type of draw system does Montana use?

A really shitty one! We have "bonus" points you acquire each year for one more chance to be drawn, but it does not help your chances really as everyone buys the bonus points each year. It's just a feel good measure and a way for FWP to make some more money. They truly do struggle for $$$ each year though so I get that. I think Montana needs to come up with a better way to fund FWP and all that comes with the agency. I'd like to see something permanent in funding that they get every year from the state instead of just relying solely on hunting and fishing license sales.

I'd also really like to see them go to a once in a lifetime on moose, sheep, and goat. That coming from a guy who drew a goat tag 4 years ago after 33 years and only saw one mountain goat the whole season! Still feel that way. Need to give more folks a chance to get a tag to hunt. Love to see more folks have a chance at the adventure that comes with one of these. One idea I had too is that if a person for whatever reason never saw the animal he wanted, or in my case there just weren't any, and they never filled the tag, maybe they could still do the mandatory 7 year wait before they could apply again. I'd be okay with that, but no-one deserves more than one of these fabulous animals in my opinion. Even doing once in a lifetime won't dramatically increase the odds, but it sure helps keep down the sour notes from seeing way too many folks drawing multiple tags.

Here's just a few off the top of my head. Good friend drew a mountain goat tag the year before they made it so you had to wait 7 years to apply. The very next year he drew another goat tag AND a moose tag!

Another guy I know drew a sheep tag in one of the best districts in the state. He got a ram with 43" horns per side and almost 16 1/2" at the base! The VERY FIRST year he could apply again he drew another ram tag for a different area.

My buddy Don drew a goat tag that I was lucky enough to get to go on the hunt with him. He shot a great billy. A couple years ago he drew his SECOND mountain goat tag! I could go on , but you get the idea. Sorry for the rant, but it's frustrating as all heck.

I hear ya. Sometimes it just seems like if it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all.
Hope you draw next year.

Was hoping when I saw the title you would have drawn a permit, hope you can draw next year........

I really can't complain with the great hunting over the counter tags I can get. I feel blessed truly. It sure would be nice to get a moose and or a sheep though.
