Greetings. Seems like every issue of Shotgun News has a full page ad for their range finder type scopes. I find them interesting but have never seen one nor do I know anybody who has any experience with them. This might be the spot to find out about these scopes. Anybody have experience with these? Know anybody who has tried them? Thanks in advance. Newy

They are very bright, tough as nails and very repeatable. Spendy but you get what you pay for.

If BDC type reticles are what you like, then yes it works ok. I wouldn't expect 1 shot kills at 1000 yards though right off the bat. With practice, maybe...

Theres a guy in our elk camp that has one on his 7 RM and hes used it to take game to 750 yards, mainly deer/elk. You ahve to remember though that it is calibrated for specific velocities/BC's. At long range, there is A LOT of stuff that comes into play and a BDC type reticle really isn't the best choice past about 600 yards IMO. He hasn't had any problems with his mechanically though that I know of.

I looked through his scope and didn't think it was very clear or bright, not next to my Leupolds anyways. I also dont like 10 circles in my scope, to cluttering.

I think for the money, there is better scopes to be had.

My buddy had one on a 308 win and it worked well for good light time for deer hunting out in fields but those reticles in the shepherds are no good for early morning or late evening low light conditions. They are too thin and you can't see them. I said that the shepherd worked well, that is, when you knew the exact yardage your target was at. He had it before the laser range finders came about. If a deer was beyond 200 yards and you misjudged your yardage 30 or 40 yards you missed or worse put a low bad shot on it. I had to help him trail up and finish off two deer that the bullet hit too low because of his yardage error and just broke the front legs of the deer. They can push themselves a long way with their back legs. He was lucky on both of these deer that they were perfect broad side shots and it got both legs instead of just one or he would most likely have not gotten them. He got rid of that scope and went to a heavy duplex reticle Leupold and a 3 inch high zero at 100 yards with a 125 gr Sierra but now uses a Nosler ballistic tip bullet at 3100 fps. He did not have shots much over 300 yards. With this set up and zero he can hold center of a deers front shoulder and kill it out to 300 yards.
